Public transport question

We are planning a trip to Toronto / Kingston / Gananoque around 20th May 2012. We will arrive in Toronto late pm on the 19th and looking to stay 2 nights in either Kingston or Gananoque.

Accommodation seems pretty tight in Gananoque on 19/20 May so Kingston is perhaps our best option.

As those dates are on the weekend, what is the likelihood of good a taxi service between Kingston and Gananoque and roughly what would be the fare each way. We'd be travelling from downtown Kingston to the wharf area of Gananoque.

Also as we'd be arriving from Toronto and going back to Toronto by public transport, how far is the bus terminal or train station to downtown Kingston (eg near the Holiday Inn / Sheraton 4 points etc)? If it is quite a distance away, are taxis in plentiful supply at the station?

Thanks

Hi, I just checked and the hotels in Gan seem to still have space, so that may be your best bet. That is a holiday weekend in Ontario. Lots of trains go to Gan each day from Toronto. I live in Kingston, there are always taxis at the train station to meet each train. The distance from the train station to downtown isn't really far.. Kingston is a small city.

Hi DougoOz;

With all due respect to kleffy, while there are many passenger trains that run between Toronto & Montreal, only two stop at Gananoque, in late afternoon & evening - 17:30 & 21:40.

You might consider taking the train as far as Kingston, and then renting a car. It may be cheaper than a taxi to / from Gan, which is 18 miles / 28 km from Kingston. There is an "Enterprise" car rental outlet just a short walk from the Kingston VIA Rail station. If you call them, they may even pick you up.

In actual fact the VIA train service to Gananoque is very limited ... only one stop in either direction per day, as you can see from the VIA rail website.

You would be better off taking the train to Kingston, and either taking a taxi to Gananoque or as you note, stay in Kingston.

Both quite far(as per your definition of requiring taxi service), or take the city bus, when running.

>> there are always taxis at the train station to meet each train.

Not if you're arriving from Toronto on the last train and you aren't the first dozen or so passenger to grab a taxi. 30 minute wait is in order, until those taxis come back.

Thank you all for your comments - all are very helpful to my planning.

As it is a long weekend, will some of the venues and public transport options have limited hours?

The reason I'm asking is because sometimes here in Australia some shops close or limit their hours for Public Holidays and public transport (apart from taxis) run on a reduced schedule.

Transit will run on a reduced schedule on holidays. You can check out the schedules on their website. They also seem to have a journey planner, butI'm not sure how well it works because I haven't used it. cityofkingston.ca/residents/…

The distance from train/bus stations answer would depend on how far is far to you. Should you walk it - no. If you take a cab, and there are no traffic problems, it would likely take 10-15 minutes to either. The transit journey planner would let you know how long by bus, but I imagine quite a bit longer because you'd likely have to change buses.

I agree that if it is at all an option for you, rent a car to go to Gan. Enterprise will pick you up if you are renting a car from them - they're just around the corner from the train station - maybe a 10 minute walk but one without sidewalks so not a pleasant one.

Most shops will likely be open on the holiday - Kingston is sometimes open when other cities stores are closed due to the strong tourist presence in the city. I would highly suggest you check with specific stores though to be sure.

DougoOz

Since I see from your question that you are not coming until 2012 I thought I would offer you some additional comments to those already offered. Regarding accommodations, I would try The Gananoque Inn or Clarion Inn, both of these are at the opposite end of town from the Casino and are very near the water. There is also a wonderful B&B called The Trinity House near the wharf whom I would check out.

Regarding transportation from the Via Train Station to downtown Kingston is about 6.5 km., the Bus Terminal is about 5km, during the day there is good transit bus service from both locations and due to the size of the city taxis are rarely long to wait for in May. (as a note of information, Kingston Transit is now on Google Maps so when you know where you are staying in Kingston you can check the bus route and schedule to where you want to go based on your arrival time and get your complete route details.) There are often more taxis waiting at the train station than the bus station although both are well served.

There is no public transportation between Kingston and Gananoque, you are looking at a distance of about 30 km each way from Downtown Kingston to the wharf area of Gananoque. the best option might be to call two or three taxi companies when you arrive and ask for a quote for the run. If you find a taxi sitting on the street or at a hotel, you could also ask them for a price, if they are an owner (which is common in Kingston) they might offer you a better deal for the distance trip off the meter. You could also schedule your return at this time as taxi availability in Gananoque is very limited.

I hope this information is of some help to you, please don't hesitate to post further if I can clarify anything for you.

Thanks Highbrae

We've decided to give it a miss this time as we wouldn't have been able to go the area justice in the time we have available. Maybe next time ....
