Hi rosietom;

It would be helpful to those who can be of assistance, if you stated WHEN you will be in Kingston.

The answers you receive will be dependant on the season / time of year.

Kingston is a lovely town, especially in the summer and fall. Located right on the east end of Lake Ontario, close to the beautiful 1000 Islands area, and south of the Rideau lakes. Lots of outdoor activities - boating, hiking, etc. Many historical buildings, museums, and forts.Great restaurants. Assuming you'd have access to a car you are only a few hours drive from Ottawa, our nation's capital with many museums, galleries, etc. Also within 3 hours drive of Toronto, and about 4 hours to Montreal. Close to the wonderful Prince Edward County with gorgeous beaches, vineyards, craftspeople and artisans. It is also relatively close to upstate NY.

It depends on what you're interested in doing on vacation. If it is cities and nightlife then Kingston's not for you. But great for relaxation.

Hi rosietom;

Kingston was one of many sites of the historic War of 1812, between the US and Canada, and was the first capital city of Canada.

You won't want to miss Fort Henry, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization. (UNESCO)

Just 18 miles east of Kingston is Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY), the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". You can take a 1 hr, 2.5 hr, or 5 hr boat tour of the 1000 Islands.

The area is great. Lots to see and do. Many outdoor activities abound and the city itself has lots of fine restaurants, bars and attractions. I'd have no problem kicking back in that area for a month during the summer. Go for it!

Kingston City Hall is one of Canada's finest 19th century buildings. It was built when Kingston was the capital in 1841. If you speak nicely to the lady on reception, you can go upstairs to look at the stained glass windows in the Memorial Hall. Each full length window commemorates a battle that took place in WW1. It is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm (donations welcomed). It is located on 216 Ontario Street facing the waterfront where you can take a 1000 islands trip passing Fort Henry.

Kingston also has the highest number of restaurants per capita on Princess Street and Brock Street.

It really is a beautiful city with lots to offer. You've been given lots of great information already. It also puts you within striking distance of some other great cities (Gananoque, Ottawa, Montreal) and places such as the Sharbot Lake and Frontenac Provincial Parks.
