Maid of the Mist & movie cameras

I am sure this is one of the most asked questions, but can you safely take movie of the falls from Maid of the Mist? My husband thinks a plastic bag with silicone gel is the way to go. I think the camera would survive better with clear contact paper!! (just kidding).

Well .........your ideas?

Hi;

DO NOT take any electronic items on board...they WILL get wet!

Some people that have tried the plastic bag trick and report that their bag began to fog up, making their pictures useless.

Another poster has advised that you can purchase a cheap waterproof disposable camera for about $10. That's going to be your best bet short of buying some underwater gadget.

Best Regards

Rescue,

Thanks. My husband wants to try the plastic bag trick even if it turns out the movies are to be scrapped.

This has been posted before. My take is if you can find a case thats good for underwater use, it be good enough for the Maid of the Mist ride. I do know they make some for camera's but not sure for those video camera's. Some very good camera's take good movies-my canon G7 does and canon does make a nice underwater case for it. Not cheap-$170 and thats just for the case.

I would not try the plastic bag-see the boat stops for a little bit, so yes everything gets very wet.

Two years ago my hubby, daughter and I went on the Maid of the Mist (our first time on it) and hubby decided to take video with the camera. You can see it under video's in my profile. Its not the best quality but we didn't put the camera in anything...and yes it did get wet but we haven't noticed any difference in the camera or the pics since.

I just went on the Maid of the Mist again a few days ago only I didn't take photos or video up close to the falls this time....I only took pics as we left the dock and put the camera away for when the real soaking came!!

Thanks for all of your input. My husband seems determined to try to take movies. I don't care how they turn out, well I do, but my main worry is damage to the camera. He thinks heavy plastic and a rubber band will do.

I think it also makes a difference if you are on the top deck instead of the lower deck. The lower deck still gets wet, but not as wet and you can always back away from the windows to dry off. I have not been on the top deck, but I think that would be a lot tougher on a camera. Anyone else have any thoughts about lower vs. upper deck and using a camera?

We went last year and were on the lower deck by default-boat was pretty darn full by the time we got on! Anyways, my digital camera has a video feature and I used it for a few short videos-they turned out fine and a year later the camera is still working fine. I do recall that at some points during the ride I stuck it under my poncho but during the less wet points of the trip I still got some nice video and didn't ruin my camera.
