We are coming to Niagara for my husbands 40th!

I'm so excited, we have just booked to come over to Canada for my husbands 40th birthday(i am Scottish, he is Irish and we live in England lol), we will be there from 22nd October to 25th October(added bonus is no kids as my sister has kindly offered to watch them) We fly into Pearson Intl arriving around 4.15pm Canada time on the Monday, is it best for us to get a hire car or make our way from airport to falls(if so-how?) We are booked into Embassy Suites(pushed boat out and got Jnr Presidential Whirlpool suite). I have read previous posts and details of Embassy Suites and it seems the biggest compaint there is about valet parking and because of this, I was wondering if we actually need a car?

For his birthday, is the Keg the best place to eat(especially since we are staying at that hotel) or is there somewhere better? Is it easy to get to the Casino from our hotel as we both would like to have a look and perhaps a small(and i mean small) flutter!

What trips are best, we have both agreed that the helicopter tour is a no-no(chickens!), but we will just make it in time for the last of the MOTM, is it worth going on? Behind the falls, IMax etc?

What is the weather likely to be like then? Do I need very thick clothes ie wool coats or lighter wear?

Are there any good bars for us to go too that isnt full of youngsters but has good music/atmosphere? Is Niagara on the Lake a good day trip or more a half day? If we dont go there, is it easy enough to drive back up to Toronto and do a day trip there or is best to get a bus etc?

Finally, really looking forward to coming, any suggestions or ideas most gratefully accepted.

If you are comfortable driving on the other side of the road, then I would suggest renting a car. The only down side is that you would be catching the tail end of the evening rush hour traffic and it will be dark by that time. It is, however, all highway from the airport to Niagara Falls, so it is well lit and signed. The car will come in handy since you plan on going to Niagara on the Lake, as there is no public transportation. If you choose to due the shuttle route, try Niagara Airbus www.niagaraairbus.com

The Keg would be a good choice for a birthday dinner. Others you might try: Copacabana (across the street), Canyon Creek or Grand Buffet at Fallsview Casino, Casa D'Oro or Capri near Clifton Hill.

Fallsview Casino is just half a block from the hotel. Casino Niagara is about a mile away.

Maid of the Mist is a must. You might concider the Adventure Pass that will get you into MotM, Journey Behind the Falls, White Water Walk and the Butterfly Conservatory, with a People Mover/Incline Railway day pass. www.niagaraparks.com/nfgg/discountpass.php The Imax movie is pretty good and Skywheel on Clifton Hill is neat.

Weather will likely be cool then, 50ºF in the day and 40ºF at night but it is best to layer your clothing so you're ready for an unusually warm or cold day.

The 365 Club at Fallsview Casino has good bands and no youngsters.

You can easily spend a good part of a day in Niagara on the Lake, especially if you visit a few wineries (not too much sampling for the driver). You could even still catch a play at the Shaw Festival.

Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for that fallsdude, you really are a local expert!

We are thinking of perhaps leaving early on the day we fly home and spending it in Toronto(we dont fly till 8.40pm in the evening) We will still have our hire car, what is the best thing to do with it, we want to keep it to keep our luggage in, Is it best to drive into downtown Toronto and park up there and then take a tour? (my hubbie regularly drives in Europe when we are on holiday which is other side of road and last year drove in Florida so hopefully will be fine)

Is it worth us going over the border for some time? Is shopping better/cheaper(we are getting just over $2 to the £ at moment, $1.94 US to the £. I am really just going to be looking for kids clothes and sportswear(they will kill me if i dont take stuff back lol) Where are the best places to get them?

Many Thanks

There are lots of parking lots in Toronto, so that's probably a good idea. If you are going to do a tour, find out where it would start and search for the nearest lot here: http://www.greenp.com/tpa/index.jsp

It might not be a bad idea to have a shop in Niagara Falls N.Y.. Even though our dollars are almost par now, prices and selection are generally better in the U.S. The Military Rd. area has Fashion Outlets Mall, Walmart, Big K, and Target. Be sure to tell the car rental company that you will be taking the car to the U.S.

Jr presidential whirlpool suite is a great one.....make sure to bring your camera...the Keg is definately the restaurant you want for a special occasion, make sure you make reservations and say its hubby's birthday....request a fallsview table....From what I have heard so far, the time you will be here, the temps will be about 18c in the daytime, so a light sweater....and a bit cooler at night so a light jacket...

the Journey beneath the falls is really a must IMO.....walking 1/3 behind the canadian falls is awesome....

we've never had a problem with the valet parking at the Embassy ...the staff is very professional and friendly..

I hope you have a great time:)

Thanks everyone for the replies, keep em coming. I love this site and log on every day just to see what has been posted!!

I think I will book the Keg for his birthday, the night we arrive we may try the Cococabana over the road as we will get in about 6.30pm ish.........by the time we check in, change we may just want something close....for the third night, thought of hitting Clifton Hill?? Capri or the Mexican??(cant remember name) Have also seen great reviews for Mick and Angelo?? (I love Indian so any good one would be appreciated)

I called Embassy Suites the other day, disappointing thing is that they cannot put a bottle of Champagne in room for our arrival as apparantly "they wont know our room till we get there".......hmmmm....have stayed in some big hotels both here and abroad and have never heard of this(New York Hilton where we got married for instance didnt have a problem and it is or was biggest hotel in New York!!)

How much is drinks there by the way, I have read some scary posts saying that it is about £10 ie $20 CAN dollars for a glass of wine?? Neither of us are that big drinkers but being away on our own with no kids, we may like to have a few wines........any tips welcome as where/what to purchase.

You will probably be paying $5-$8 for basic drinks, depending on the establishment.

Capri and Taco N'Taquila are on Ferry St. between Clifton Hill and Fallsview.

A good Indian place is the Guru at the top of Clifton Hill.

I've just double checked the website for the Embassy...they offer a romance package, which says they will leave chocolate covered strawberries in your room along with a bottle of champagne...If they offer this, they must know which room you will be staying in ahead of time.....I know from past experience, we have gone up and given our reservations and the clerks go to a filing system and take out our file,....they know which room you will be staying in...please call them back on the 1-800 #..ask for a manager if they can't tell you which room you will be staying in.

I hope you have a great trip:)
