US Dollars in Restaurants, etc.

Will be in Niagara Falls, Canada for 4 nights in June. I am hoping that I will not have to change currency and that my American money will be accepted restaurants and shops. I know the Canadian dollar is worth more than the American Dollar, but the difference is slight and therefore I would prefer not to acquire Canadian money if it is not necessary. Can someone please clarify for me.

Most places will gladly accept US$--however-- they usually give you less than the going rate(which is bad enough for Americans these days). Since you will be there 4 nights, it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of Canadian money. If every restaurant, souvenir shop, etc. takes an extra few % over the going rate, you may lose more $$$ than you think.

U.S. money is accepted everywhere here.

Some restaurants may vary; but the Niagara Parks Commission restaurants do not charge a premium.

In fact the U.S. dollar is slightly higher than the Canadian dollar at the moment, but that could change by the time you get here as it's been hovering around par or above for several weeks now.

As said above everyone will accept U.S. $$, but as jmat said not everyone will give you the going exchange rate. PLus, all your change will be given back in Canadian dollars. Truly is easier to go to one of the casinos and change some money into Canadian. Then you simply pay the price as listed. If you have money left over, go back to the casino and change it back as you are leaving.

Just to clarify - if you're just here for 4 days, you can withdraw some small amount out of an ATM when you get here for little things and then pay for everything else with a credit card.

Some credit card companies charge conversions fees; it's not alot but can add up..

Your best option is to use your credit card wherever possible. Even with the conversion fee, you pay less than getting money at an ATM or exchanging it ahead of time (which is the worst option). FYI - I work at a bank.

I think it's safe to say that everyone will take US currency at par right now ( 0.97/0.98 today), so don't worry.
