canadian currency

Any recommendations for converting US dollars into Canadian? Should I try to get some money converted before I get to the Canadian side? How about travelers checks? Easy to convert as well at the Currency Exchanges? Thanks for all the tips and info.

I have heard that the casino's in the falls give excellent rates, but the bank would be your best bet so you don't get tempted to gamble it all away. Always good to have a few Canadian dollars for when you get there, although if worst comes to worst everone accepts US dollars but not at the best rates of course.

I know that for a Canadian converting to U.S. we get better rates over here than if we wait until we get to the U.S. Not sure if that helps you or not.

casinos give the best rates as well as banks. personally i would just go to any bank before you get to canada and get the exchange, the other posters are right, your much more likely to gamble the money away, but if thats what you planned on doing then go ahead. but overall, its probably much much more convenient to stop at a bank you see in buffalo and hand them your USD and get CDN in 1 minute rather than cross the border, check into your hotel, unpack, walk around the city and find the casino and then exchange your currency.

Great advice! Esp DannyV on getting currency in Buffalo before crossing the border. We've no intention of hitting casinos, so the tip on stopping at the US banks was a good one! :-)

For what items is it necessary to convert for? I am just planning an overnight stay - arrive around 3:00 p.m., leave by 8:00 a.m.

If I use my credit card for the hotel, meals, etc, what else would I need to convert for?

I usually recommend that you convert say $50 or something just because some places won't give you a great exchange rate. The best place to do it is in the Casino - they think you're playing there, so they give a better rate.

You don't -need- Canuck cash other then at the casino - you have to gamble w/ Canadian. :)

Thanks. I will be alone in the Falls with my 10 year old son. I assume he can't enter the casino.

Can I get to a currency exchange without entering the part of the casino he can't get to?

if you dont convert your money and use a credit card then you get slammed with more bills for using your card in canada. youd be wiser to pay with cash on anything that doesnt have to be paid with a card.
