Tips - If I had known ...

Hi,

Looking for any 'tips' for a first time visitor to Niagara Falls - things that you did or didn't do, etc, where afterwards you thought "If I had known ..., I would have done ...

Thanks.

the #1 thing you want to do is the Maid of the Mist. An awesome experience that you will never forget. you can also walk behind the falls. another nice thing to do is go to the butterfly conservatory. It is a little further away from the falls but only a short drive up the river. along the way you can stop and look at the whirlpool. There are always the little things to do also that will keep you busy like just walking up Lundy's lane. There are lots of little shops and restaurants and little attractions to kill time. I would skip the wax museum. But if you have kids there is the fun house and the haunted house (not so haunted for adults). But my two most favourite things were the Maid of the Mist and the Butterfly Conservatory.

Perhaps realizing that there is much more to the Niagara area than the Falls and the Niagara Falls tourist attractions. A lovely drive along river takes you to the pretty town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. If you are a history buff the area is rich in historic sites relating especially to the War of 1812 as well as African American/African Canadian history. If you are a transportation buff there is a railroad museum in Ft. Erie and the Welland Canal viewing Centre in St. Catharines. Also, if you are on a multi-day visit, Toronto and its attractions are less than 2 hours away by highway or rail.

Have a great visit.

If I had known how much there was to do, I would have added on another day to our trip. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and departed on a Wednesday morning. Even though we managed to see most of the major attractions/sites, we never got a chance to go to Niagara-On-the-Lake, Skylon Tower, or walk over the bridge to the NY side or see the locks. These were all on our to do list, but we just ran out of time.

After going to Niagara Falls this summer my recommendation would be to stay at home or to go somewhere else. The falls are spectacular but the town is a combination of casinos and cheap amusement park that totally ruins the experience.

Seeing what the Canadians have done with this natural wonder truly justifies a US land grab to turn the falls and both shores into a National park.

This isn't helpful.

14 million visitors who flock to see the falls every year must be accommodated and entertained.

That silly comment about being annexed by the United States shows how truly misguided you are.

Well the N.Y. State park is very nice but what else is over on the N.Y. side....oh, another casino, lol.

I don't care for "kiddie land" ...."Cliff Hills" or whatever its called. Infact I tend to park my car away from there and run down a steep hill that takes me right by the rainbow falls--why there can be no stairs over there? All there is is a sign say to stay out.

You can go by the casino to bypass the kids area too.

Since couples like to go to the Falls, i guess the thinking was to make the Falls kiddie freindy so they could bring the kids along too.

It could have been a bit father away thou..and they should get the places to stop all the noise, it takes away the sound from the Falls.

If you look you see that Def is from Norway....they came in from across the world.

Thanks for your view point, others have said they didn't care for how kid freindy the town was......but none said the USA should step in, lol.

I don't believe the poster is really from Norway.

They've always struck me as polite and tactful; not advocating grabbing land from other nations.
