eating and transport

We are coming into Niagara Falls from NYC and will have no car. Is there a public transport system, or are there a lot of places within walking distance? We will be staying at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and have no intentions of renting a car. Also, are there dining options other than chain restaurants such as Applebees? We highly dislike those sorts of places (we're food snobs and prefer better quality/better value food), plus I don't feel they are as allergy-friendly (I have some severe food allergies). Are there any groceries stores or small food stores in the area by any chance? Or am I better off bringing my own food?

Also, what is the best way to get from the Amtrak station to the hotel?

there is a Keg restaurant right next door in the Embassy suites hotel, when ordering, just ask for the kitchen manager to come out and discuss your food allergies....the nearest grocery store is quite a ways away from the hotel, so you might want to bring some of your own food, the hotel rooms come with a small fridge and microwave in each room...

Does Amtrak still run from NYC to Toronto? If so you can get off in Niagara Falls,On. From there to your hotel would be about $10.cab fare. There are usually taxis waiting out front when train arrives. One long established restaurant we like is the Casa Dora. It is italian cusine and located approx. 20 minute walk from your hotel.

Other dining choices nearby:

Terrapin Grille at the Marriott next door

A Cut Above Steakhouse at the Sheraton

Noir 17, Golden Lotus and Canyon Creek Chophouse all at Fallsview Casino

The Watermark at the Hilton

AG at the Sterling Inn (near the aforementioned Casa D'Oro)

The tourist specific transportation systems do not, unfortunately, operate in the winter. You are staying in the Fallsview area, close to Fallsview Casino and a fairly short walk to the Falls. The Clifton Hill area is about a mile away. Niagara Transit bus #4 does come within 1/2 block of your hotel, and would take you to the Clifton Hill area.

Casa Vostra restaurant is a local favourite.

5928 Clark Ave. Closest intersection is Stanley Ave and Victoria. The cab driver should know, not too far from your hotel but slightly too far to walk, especially walk back on a full stomach. The seafood ravioli is fantastic as is the veal and rack of lamb.

Hi Sushimonster,

As a foodie you really should try to get out to Niagara-on-the-Lake there are great restaurants there, especially those at the Wineries... much better than the "run of the mill stuff" that is so prominent at the Falls.

(Not that there isn't good food in NF too... just that I think there is better food to be had in NOTL).

Cheers!

In Niagara-on-the-Lake check out 'Stone Road Grille' and 'The Old Winery' restaurants. They are both very good and very popular.
