trip report - 4/15 - 4/18

We drove from Branford CT, staying overnight in Verona NY, to break-up the trip.

Then headed directly to Buffalo, NY to try the wings at the Anchor Bar - not a disappointment at all!

Then we drove to Tonawanda to check out the Premier Gourmet store.

Then back into the car to Niagara Falls, NY to stop at the State Park, and get our first glimpses of the falls.

Finally crossed the Rainbow Bridge (about 5 mins. wait), and checked into the Marriot Fallsview. I put a separate review on their site - it was wonderful. We had a room on the 22nd floor, with views to die for.

We were blessed with incredible spring weather, so spent much of time walking along the Horseshoe Falls. Our hotel was a very short distance to the casino, and we ate at the Food Court twice. I also walked over in the morning to get my tea - I didn't want to pay almost $3 for a cup at the hotel Starbucks, when the Tim Horton's and another vendor (forget the name) sold tea for a little more than $1.

The casino I thought was beautiful. It was fun to compare the slots there to our slots back home.

We drove along the Parkway to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Beautiful town. Beautiful parkway. Our second-best pictures were taken on Lake Ontario.

I love the shops downtown.

We did stop at the Butterfly conservatory, and got some great photos.

We were intending on eating at the Flying Saucer one day, but were talked out of it by our hotel tour desk clerk, for reasons I won't go into.

We did try the Swiss Chalet, and I was a little disappointed.

I did take my daughters to Clifton Hill - had no trouble finding a parking space on the street. (mid-afternoon on a Friday). They only asked to go into the criminal wax museum, and we all enjoyed it.

Everyone we met in Canada was very friendly, and made our vacation that much more enjoyable.

Looking forward to coming back to Niagara Falls, CA.

The Anchor bar was the first place in North America to serve chicken wings. What were the wings like? Did they serve them with a dip?

The Niagara Casino is definitely nice. I wouldn't spend much time there gambling on the slots, myself.. because it's a government run Casino which means a sure loss. I know what you mean though, with different types of slots.

Was there still the hamburger place at the Casino downstairs?

Swiss Chalet is not really that special. It's just a place to go for a chicken and fries. At one time we had two companies that offered value meals. St. Hubert and Swiss Chalet. You would go and have coleslaw (free) as an appetizer while you waited for your meal. The major difference between the two chains was the sauce they used. Swiss Chalet had a little bit of a spicier sauce. St. Huberts pretty much closed down. There are still a few Swiss Chalet's here.

Hi Jean8,

Great Trip Report.... sounds like you had a great time.

Glad to hear that you are planning a return trip.

As already stated, Swiss Chalet isn't "special" just plain good inexpensive family fare.

--- --- ---

TO SLEEPINGINSPAGHETTI,

FYI, St Hubert basically started the Rotisserie Chicken business in Canada like a zillion years ago (think it was the 40s or 50s) the fad caught on to the point now where it is considered an essential part of Canadian cuisine (who would of thought plain old chicken). LOL

Anyways, about 10 years ago St Hubert and Swiss Chalet came to a "gentleman's agreement" Swiss Chalet would basically stay out of Quebec, and St Hubert would stay out Ontario (exception the Ottawa Area where there is a strong Montreal influence... 2 Restaurants left there, both in the more francaphone east end).

As much as I love Swiss Chalet, as an ex-Montrealer I gotta say that St Hubert is hands down my absolute favourite (vinegar coleslaw and dipping sauce for this gal). Not to mention the soups, and desserts.

Both chains win on good value though... part of the reason they are both family favourites and Canadian success stories.

Cheers!

If I remember correctly....In the Food Court, there was a Tim Horton's, the small coffee/ice cream vendor, an Italian restaurant, and Johnny Rocket's.

Seeing Johnny Rockets made me laugh, as the only ones I know about back home, are the the one located in the Mohegan Sun complex, and one in Atlantic City, which is right outside Bally's, I believe.

They follow the casinos!

But I do like their veggie burger, and my girls love their milk shakes.

Oops, sorry, about the wings. As stated, they are served with the blue cheese and celery. And they were quite delicious! My 13-yr. old daughter had them with the hot sauce, and my 15-yr. old daughter tried the mild sauce. Both good.

I also tried their chedar cheese/bacon soup, and it was Very good and creamy!

I'm wondering where you stayed in Verona, NY... We're planning on driving out this June from Mid-Coast Maine and are still deciding if we'll break up the 11+ hour trip...Thanks for your help and for all the great info in your trip report!

We stayed at the Microtel hotel, right next to the Turning Stone casino. The price was right. It was a Wednesday afternoon when we checked in, and by nightfall, there were only 3 other cars in the parking lot. The place wasn't That bad!
