Walking distances from Doubletree

We're visiting this June with 3 children (12, 12 and 13) and are thinking the Doubletree Hotel might be a good half-way point between the attractions? I think the kids will enjoy the Clifton Hill area(tourist traps are right up their alley!) but we'd like to be able to walk to the Horseshoe Falls area too. Any advice on location is very much welcome! Thank you!!

The doubletree is about a 15 minute walk to clifton hill and 15 minutes in the other direction to the horseshoe falls. There is plenty to see and do on both walks. Doubletree is a beautiful hotel but beware the falls view rooms are not as good as the other bigger hotels as the hotel is located further back from the falls.

We were also thinking of staying at the Doubletree & seeing the sights on the Canadian side one day then walking over the Rainbow Bridge (yes we have passports) to see the sights on the USA side a separate day. Is it really a 15 minute walk from the Doubletree just to Clifton Hill? Then how far to the Rainbow Bridge? What about the Hampton Inn @ the Falls ... is it in a better/closer location ... it's hard to tell from the maps? We were hoping to use hotel points but since we have a child with us, proximity to the Falls attractions is a major factor in where we stay.

Thank you Jays2008! Any opinion on the Hilton (the one with the new tower being built)?...that's the other hotel we're considering. Can't wait to get there - no matter where we end up!

Hi;

Here is an interactive map of Niagara Falls Canada.

niagarafallslive.com/Niagara_Falls_Interacti…

The view is facing the US side, with the Fallsview area on the right side, and Clifton Hill on the upper left. Click on a building, and a new page will open with a description and details.

The Rainbow Bridge is visible on the left side of the picture, spanning the Niagara Gorge.

I hope that helps.

Best Regards

Hi Midcoastmainemom,

I am very familiar with the location of the Doubletree having stayed there in the past... it is a tad out of the way, but I agree it is hard to envision what the area looks like just based on the Niagara Falls Interactive Map... one has to remember that there virtually 2 levels... the Parkway Level and the Escarpment Level (where the hotels are strung out along the edge as to take advantage of the elevation / view).

You might have a better "vision" of the area by consulting GOOGLE MAPS... first look at the street layout and then switch over to the satellite view.

Anyways, GOOGLE MAPS lists the walking distance from the Doubletree to say midway down Clifton Hill as 1.2 Km, or about a 14 minute walk... the proposed route is Stanley to Ferry/Victoria and then onto Clifton Hill. Of course this is utilizing sidewalks, once you are in the area, you'll see that there are a lot of parking lots where you can cut thru as a short-cut etc.

GOOGLE MAPS also states that the difference from midway down Clifton Hill to the Canadian Side of the Rainbow Bridge is about 1/2 Km and about a 6 minute walk... via Falls Avenue (which will get you to the Bridge level).

So yes, it is about a 20 minute walk from the DoubleTree to the Bridge... then of course there is the walk across... so say at least a 1/2 Hour to get yourself to the American side.

Having stayed in Niagara Falls many times, I would say that the numbers that GOOGLE MAPS gives for distances and walking times is indeed realistic.

GOOGLE MAPS also helped me to figure out the walking distance to the Horseshoe Falls. From the Doubletree on Stanley, make your way to Main and Fallsview, Embassy Suites is on the corner... by going around the side of the Embassy Suites you'll come out on a sidewalk above Portage... this leads to the Walkover across Portage, and to the Incline Railway. Time from Doubletree to the Incline is about 12 Minutes (1 Km). The Incline Railway will take you down to the lower level, then it's just a matter of crossing the street (you'll be at the Table Rock Centre) to the Horseshoe Falls.

Table Rock Centre is where you'll find a variety of services including access to the Journey Behind the Falls (elevators to the tunnels are in this building). As well right outside is where you can catch the People Mover... a good way to get back and forth to spots along the Parkway.

Maid of the Mist is at the opposite end of the gorge... down by the bottom of Clifton Hill.

Anyways, hope this is helpful,

Cheers!

PS... On the good side, Doubletree is an excellent hotel and has a decent in-house Restaurant.

There is, actually, a shortcut from the Doubletree into Queen Victoria Park that many people don't know about. It is known locally as the Jolley Cut, and it is a path/stairway from the end of Robinson St., beside the Skylon, down into the park. It is not lit, so is best used during the day, and is closed during the winter, but is available the rest of the year, and can be quite handy at times.

TO FALLSDUDE,

I didn't refer to it because of it's issues (the ones you've already listed).

Plus, if memory serves me right it is kind of "rough" footing as well. (?)

Cheers!

My personal opinion is that with kids that age you want to stay as close to clifton hill as possible.

I would suggest the country inn and suites or the sheraton on the falls.
