Niagara Tips

In many posts, there are tips hidden among the comments, and you have to sift through a lot of text to find out important tips, so..... here's a thread where you can post your tips and advice about saving money, where to park, things to do, things to not waste your money on,etc..

So, I'll start

PARK FOR FREE AT FALLSVIEW CASINO-

--a lot of the hotels nearby charge $20 or so a day for parking,, but by joining the Players Advantage club(its free), you can park free and walk to your hotel after you unload your luggage

EXCHANGE CURRENCY TO CANADIAN AT CASINO OR BANK-

-- every place will gladly do this, but they will not give you the fair exchange rate. The banks and casinos seem to be the only places that won't rip you off. Now with the exchange rate being only about 18% its not a big deal. But, in the past(and hopefully in the future) exchange rates were 30, 40, even 50 %, a lot of places gave you MUCH less than the going rate. many people didn't even know they were being taken. So when you go, check what the current rate is, and make sure you get that rate

So everyone and myself can add more tips for future travelers to Niagara

Hi Jmat,

Nice post.....where were you when we first went 2 years ago.......If people drive to the old part of Niagara Falls(downtown) they will find a number of banks. We have also found a shoe store that has the best prices for brand named shoes. ( we did'nt like the outlet mall).

Also when your hotel gives you a coupon for x amount of dollars towards dinner......Call the resaurant directly and find out how much the meals are. Most restaurants will really push (the view) on people to make up for over charging. And lastly most hotels only have valet parking, because they don't have a parking lot on their property. I found out some park your car 2 blocks away. When on vacation, we like to pick up and just go, not wait around for our car.

Yeah, that would be a good tip, too. Every hotel offers the 2 night packages, with the free breakfast and dinner one day. You used to find places that gave you several choices for a totally free dinner( except a tip ). NOW its a voucher towards dinner, that almost never pays for 2 complete dinners. Depending on ones appetite, you can sometimes get one large appetizer, and one dinner and share with your spouse, and be close to the amount of your voucher. the free dinner isn't free anymore.

I just found and joined this site earlier this year, and love reading about everyone's opinions about my favorite place-Niagara- and offering any advice I can. I've probably been there about 50 times in the last 15 or so years, and have stayed at about 15 different hotels there, and ate at many restaurants. I've definitely learned some things over the years

We stayed at the Hilton last December. When told we would get$75.00CDN off dinner. I got very suspicious. I called and the entree's were $26.00 to $69.00

I had the pasta , hubby had the prime rib ,he had one beer, I had one glass of local wine. With tip it still cost us $50.00.

We stayed at the Oakes last March. We didn't even use our coupons. Didn't like the look of the Applebys( plus select menu) And didn't know that we had to take a shuttle to the dinner(again select menu). We order from an Italian place called Zappi's...great food ,resonable prices.

Hi again

You mentioned that you have stayed at 15 hotels.......Have you stayed at the Embassy suites ot the fallsview Marriott. We are currently booked at the Hilton for mid-dec. Just wondering If we should spend a bit more on a total fallsview hotel.

Thx in advance

Definitely drive the Niagara Parkway between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

It's free and the scenery along the way is superb!

I have not stayed at either of those places. Just by being on the other side of the street, the views from some rooms at the Hilton may be of the casino complex. I'm sure that some of their rooms have nice views, but you may have to ask for a deluxe view. Also, there is a smaller-15 story section of the Hilton connected to the taller section. This used to be a Days Inn- it was there before and was just taken up by the new Hilton. Your views from the Embassy or Marriott should be better, but you probably pay accordingly

OK, here's a list of where I've stayed

Quality Inn NY side(now a Days INN )

Best Western Fireside

Days Inn River Rd

Comfort Inn Victoria Ave ( now Days Inn )

Comfort Suites (now Imperial Hotel)

Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria Ave

Days Inn next to HO JO

Courtyard by Marriott

Best Western Cairncroft

Travelodge Bonaventure

Sheraton Four Points( now Clarion Hotel)

Days Inn (now part of the Hilton)

With the exception of the Courtyard and Travelodge, all the other places were a long time ago. Anything I would say about them may not be true now

I have stayed at the Hilton, and a couple of the motels around the falls (but that was when I lived there, for parties and other get togethers!!)We stayed at the Hilton when they were building the new casino, we had a fallsview room but obviously had to look past the building site of the casino. I would prob go for a total fallsview If I was going to the falls for the first time etc. I usually would stay with friends or family so can't really give anymore advice on hotels but the Hilton is a nice hotel with what looks like a really nice restaurant at the top

Both the Hilton and the Days Inn by the Falls have package deals that include the Greg Frewin Show. I went for the 2 night Hilton package and found it quite reasonable.

PRICES ARE HIGH AND SO ARE TAXES

being a resort town, prices are raised accordingly. Taxes add up to about 18%, so factor it in to your budget. However, for non-Canadians. the 7% GST is refundable at Duty Free shops at the border. Save any receipts for hotels, souvenirs (not food, though) of at least $50CAN and redeem them when you return to the US. You can pocket the money, or use it for shopping at Duty Free
