Crossing from Canadaian Side to the US with uk passport

Hi everyone,

Just back from our trip and i wanted to update everyone as there have been many questions and loads of confusion about crossing into the US from Canada with a UK passport.

What we found out was as we had originally come from the US as part of our holiday and had just gone to Niagara for a night or 2, when we crossed back into the US there was no problem, no fee and a simple welcome back to the US. We noticed that other people who were entering into the US for the first time did have to fill in some forms and answer various questions, but the US border control were very polite and did their best to hurry the process up. We crossed the border on foot.

Hope this helps someone

If your first entry to the US is by land, you don't need to use ESTA. But it doesn't cause any problems if you do.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Canada vancouver to visit family mainly. I'm Uk passport holder (not born in uk though), I'm planning to cross border into USA with my Canadian family for short trip of 5 days in their car. Am I correct in thinking that I don't need a visa but will require to fill in i94w form at the crossing.? Secondly, Does it make any difference that I'm crossing into USA in private/hired or owned car by relatives in Canada? I need some clear information or be pointed to link/forum. I don't really want to be stranded at the border and ruin relatives plans for the trip into USA. Many thanks.

A British passport holder who can answer "No" to all the questions on the back of form I-94W (http://forms.cbp.gov/pdf/visa_waiver.pdf) doesn't need a visa for a typical tourist visit to the US. When crossing by land, I-94W is handled at the border crossing (US$6 fee per person, ideally paid in US cash) and there's nothing you need to do in advance.

There's no legal problem with taking rental cars across the border, but individual rental companies can impose their own restrictions so it's worth checking with them.

hi

thank you all for your advice

just wanted to run this buy you all..am visiting toronto next week for 6 nights and will be going to visit niagra falls (day trip) and wanted to cross over / drive over for few hours to check out nigara falls from the US side.

we all have uk passports and still have valid ESTA (came to US 18m ago - when I was required to go through secondary passport control given) - i'm guessing in theory we should be ok to go to US without having to wait hours for secondary passport control?

however, as we are muslim do y'all think we still have to have secondary passport control checks? (it was painfully slow last time and if that's the case we probably won't bother crossing over)

Thanks

Uklarka ~

While there are procedures for crossing the border into the US, it ultimately comes down to the individual American border officer you talk to at the border. That person has the discretion to decide what you will need to do.

You will almost certainly need to go to secondary inspection, because you need to fill out I-94W paperwork. ESTA isn't used at the land border; instead you complete paper forms that ask similar questions, but this can only be done when you arrive at the border. This would be true for any UK citizen.

The wait time at secondary inspection can vary from very little to several hours and there's really no way to know in advance. That's unlike the wait times at primary inspection, which are posted online.

First, Niagara Falls, not niagra.

1. The border crossings are open 24/7.

2. It is interesting to see the Falls from the U.S. side, but the only major attraction there is Cave of the Winds. Go if you have time, but not a necessity.

3. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN NIAGARA FALLS AND REGION:

I just came across this extract from this post and as I cannot afford to miss our Buffalo flight to JFK, am I right in thinking that if we just drive to Toronto instead of Buffalo and take a flight from there into the USA which I would purchase today to be in good time, our ESTAs (which we will hold from having passed through from the U.S. to Canada a few days earlier) will still be valid and by flying from Toronto we should be able to eliminate the risk of a long border wait to have I-94W completed for myself as I am under 79 years of age. (We will pre-clear U.S. customs and border control at home before even boarding the plane to U.S.)

Quote that has alarmed me:

Or else you came across this rather famous post entitled *Possible Delays and Issues Crossing Rainbow Bridge into USA* = tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154998-i97-k411220…

Which truly is an example of what a BAD DAY ON THE US BORDER can look like…
