Last minute decision: Roadtrip to the falls from NJ!

We both have next weekend off (Easter) and hopped online and booked the Sheraton on the Falls for two nights.

We're braving the drive from Southern New Jersey and heading off for an adventure. Although a short one.

Neither of us have ever been to the falls, but we're experienced travellers and rarely get an opportunity to get away for such a good price.

Once we get to the hotel on Sat, the hope is to park and not drive until time to go home on Monday. We're happy to spend what it costs to be on vacation, but we hate getting ripped off. Clifton Hill looks like a tourist trap, but it will be convenient. Any chance of hopping a cab somewhere for a great dinner nearby?

Any advice on what to see in town and along the way, what to skip and how to unwind after a 8 hour drive? We only have a week to figure this out...and and all help is appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Tina

maid of the mist is SUPPOSED to open on Wednesday the 12th so you'll probably want to try that out.

Most people enjoy the various Niagara Parks attractions (Journey Behind the Falls, Butterfly Conservatory, etc.)

Check out the falls both during the day and at night when they are lit up.

You may want to check out the casino - even if you don't gamble, Fallsview is nice to walk around in.

If you are going to do some of the amusement attractions look out for coupons... never pay full price.

Thank you htm,

The bird sanctuary sounds like a nice idea... and hopefully I can get a view of the falls from our room despite our reservations....

I've been reading some icky reviews of the Sheraton on the Falls. Is it really THAT bad? Is there a certain floor or area we should avoid or request?? (I survived the Imperial Palace in Vegas with good advice from TA members!)

Thank you all,

Tina

Tina, adults wouldn't really enjoy these cheesy places like Ripleys, wax museum, etc. I don't even know what they cost now, but I tried them all 15 years ago on our first visit, and all I can remember now was being in and out quickly, and thinking "I spent XX dollars for THAT???? On Clifton Hill, browse the gift shops, eat in Rainforest Cafe, or Boston Pizza, or Kelsey's(it will be pricey). I personally like just walking around and taking in the atmosphere, especially at night with all the glitzy lights.

I have never stayed at the Sheraton on the Falls so I can't offer any opinions. Be aware that your hotel is at the bottom of Clifton Hill. There is a Sheraton Fallsview across town. Occasionally some folks here post that they went to the wrong place.

Thanks for the info jmat,

We weren't really PLANNING on going to NF, it just fell in our laps. We were going to go into NYC for Easter weekend, but the prices were outrageous and plus, we've been there so many times....

Thanks for the info, I'll let you know how it goes

Tinabean, If you want to get out of the Clifton Hill area, you can take a cab up to Lundy's Lane and check out some of the restaurants. There is an Outlet Mall a ways down Lundys Lane. There are a few good restaurants along the way that the locals enjoy. Carpaccios is a very nice Italian restaurant with great steaks, and awsome service! Franks Tomato Pie, great Pizza. Mick n Angelos , bar atmosphere, good food.

If you like Mexican, there is Taco N Tequila closer to you, by the Liquor store, they have good Mex and great Margaritas.

Thanks Fallschick! Is Lundy's Lane so far away that we'd need a cab?

Tinabean,

It is a very long street. It starts at Clifton Hill as Victoria Avenue, around the Liquor store it becomes Ferry Street and then way up at the top of the hill it becomes Lundy's Lane. I'm guessing, but just to get to this point it would probably take about 20 mins to walk from Clifton hill, then you have a long way down Lundy's Lane depending where you want to go. Cabs are pretty cheap, but if the weather is nice and you want to walk it, make sure the shoes are comfy, cause its all up hill!

cheers

hi tina - as far as parking is concerned, you can pay $12 to park your own vehicle at the hotel, but you have to pay that every time you leave and come back. or you can pay $15 for valet parking and you can come and go as much as you want for the price.

depending on the weather, most things are an easy walk. you can stroll from the hotel to the new casino (by the skylon tower) in a reasonable amount of time. we only used the truck to go the liquor store.

the one thing that struck me this weekend is that the souvenirs were not outrageously priced. you could buy a nice sweatshirt, for instance, for $20.

I'm just back from my own umpteenth visit to Niagara Falls. Had one supper at Taki, a Japanese restaurant on Victoria Street (go up to the top of Clifton Hill and hang a right, walk along for maybe 5 minutes). It is as good as ever.

If you are history buffs there is a real museum, the Lundy's Lane Historical Museum on Ferry Street which is worth a visit.
