The falls and wineries

Hey y'all!

I'll be traveling to the falls the very last week of July into August. I was wondering if I should get a hotel by the falls for the whole trip or if there's lodging closer to the wineries or in a different area that's just as beautiful? We're staying by the falls for 2 nights right now, but are free to other options for the remainder of our nights. We will also be renting a car and don't mind traveling a little bit, but we always like exploring new areas and experiencing all they have to offer. I don't want any exclusive spa or resort type hotels but am open to any others. Any help y'all might have or recommendations on wineries or other day trips is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Niagara on the Lake is closer to the wineries....it's pricier, nicer and quieter....so it's up to you whether you'd want to drive around a half hour or so to wineries and back...
