Things to do in/between Niagara and Toronto

We are a "young" couple in our mid-30's to early 40's celebrating our first anniversary! We will would like to explore the area between Niagara, ON and Toronto in a few weeks. We will not be traveling with children.

We typically like visiting interesting places and see things away from the touristy crowds and long lines. Although we will be stopping by the falls, can anyone recommend some fun ideas?

We are traveling on a budget, so we'd like to know what are the "not to be missed" things we should visit? More importantly, can you recommend places that locals enjoy visiting?

Here are some things we may enjoy:

Street fairs or local downtown celebrations

Restaurants, coffee houses, street food- (preferably cheap prices up to $20 per person) We like Italian, Thai, bar/pub food, and specifically would love to try any local foods.

Short walking trails with no large hills or climbing, since my husband is still recovering from an injury.

Nice downtown areas with shops and restaurants to walk around and browse through shops (preferably away from the hectic, noisy crowds); places where we might hear free outdoor performances.

Do you recommend a water park that would be fun for adults? I do not think we will stay at the location overnight (ex. Great Wolf Lodge), but would like to know if the water parks are typically just for kids or if there are enough things for adults as well? I enjoy the wave pools, lazy rivers, the average water slides....wouldn't do as many extreme water slides, but my husband might.) Are there typically long lines?

Any other ideas you could think of would be welcome as well. (anything in or between Niagara and Toronto) Thanks so much!

MN a nice stopoff might be in the town of Grimsby along the way, trails fromthe base of the escarpment up into the forest. A moderate 200 or so foot climb to the top of the ridge with some pretty great views of Lake Ontario, and if the wind is from the south east, the mist coming off the falls at Niagara. Trails follow the gorge called the fourty mile creek a small canyon visable from miles away while approaching the town along the highway. Streets at the base of the ridge to a trailhead are just to the south of the downtown, and you can ask around where the trail starts.There are lots of great places to eat and accomodation is available in the town, if you prefir the local colour, stay at Teddys on the main street, an old favored roadhouse type of place where with the right attitude you will make a few interesting friends. Hope this answers at least part of your question.

MN you could also drive to Niagara on the Lake while heading out of Niagara Falls. Beautiful little town to wander around in. Lunch would be great at the "Old Angel Inn". Lots of wineries, little boutique shops (although they are all pricey), beautiful old buildings and scenery.

Hi RAP18;

Niagara Falls is approx. 80 miles / 130 km southwest of Toronto. The average drive is about 1½ hours, without any traffic delays. No need to stopover.

Best Regards

Unless there is something very specific that will keep you late, I would not be stopping over anywhere...

M N... be advised the QEW highway is often backed up eastbound on the weekends, sometimes to a full stop for miles back, because of the popularity of Niagara Falls as a day trip for people in the area. If possible through the week traveling will not be as slow. Also, Teddys in downtown Grimsby, although still a pretty good place to eat casual no longer rents its upstairs rooms to overnighters.(long term only now). About a KM. east on main street is a large park,(Centennial Park) with large trees, tables and a free place to park. Good for picnics and likely a well deserved rest in the shade, and a view up close of the Niagara escarpment.
