Niagra Falls Weekend Getaway

My boyfriend and I are looking to visit Niagra Falls in early September. He has never been, I have been there a couple of times.

From what I remember there is a lot of Tourist-y things to do. I was reading online and found what looked to be an older part of the city (downtown?) and was wondering if anyone knew ANYTHING about that. I want to give him the full experience but I also want to see what else is out there.

Also, does anyone have amy recommendations for hotels? I am looking for something not SUPER cheap but not very expensive. I also would like something that is walking distance to most restaurants and attractions. Very vague, I know!

Any way, any tips or advice is welcome!

There is really nothing in the old downtown area. Like many cities, it was made obsolete by urban shopping centres.

If you check the 'Top Questions' area at the right and 'Things To Do' at the top, there is lots of information about things to see and do.

The hotels tab at the top has many of the hotels in the city listed. You could start out by checking Country Inn and Suites or Comfort Inn Clifton Hill.

I would recommend staying on Clifton Hill or near the hill. That way you will be within close walking distance to the Falls and Queen Victoria Park.

We have stayed at the Comfort Inn Clifton several times and it is very nice. Clean rooms, decent indoor pool, continental breakfast and parking included in the price of the room. The price is around $90 during the week in early Sept. If you go on the weekend, it will probably be around $150 per night. Another option on the hill is Travelodge at the Falls. Their rates will be similar. The least expensive option on the hill is the Thriftlodge Clifton Hill. This hotel is older and needs some renovations but still a decent choice considering its great location on the hill.

If those places don't meet your budget, there are many places on Victoria Ave at the top of Clifton Hill that may work.

As far as things to do. Of course you have all of the activities on Clifton Hill and the nicely landscaped grounds of Queen Victoria Park. At the Table Rock Welcome Centre you can stand at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and can do the Journey Behind the Falls.

Don't forget the Hornblower Niagara Cruise. You should also take a walk across the Rainbow Bridge and visit the American State Park. There you can do the Maid of the Mist if you prefer that over Hornblower. The state park is very nice and you can also do the Cave of the Winds.

Other things on the Canadian side... Either of the two casinos, Skylon Tower, Whirlpool Aero Car, Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. Those are a few of the things we like to do.

Regarding downtown, as fallsdude stated, there is not much going on there. But if you are interested in the paranormal and/or ghosts, there is a ghost walk offered downtown. We haven't gone on it yet but hope to on one of our next visits.

Hope this helps. Have a fun trip!

Thanks so much! We are going to look into the ghost walk as that is something we would like to do!

Thanks again!

We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites a few weeks ago. It was moderately priced and a nice place.

It's also an easy walk to the falls and to Clifton Hill.

Downtown is a dead zone, there are a couple of shops but not worth the trek IMO..
