We just returned from Niagara Falls, Ontario and we had a terrific time! Here are a few highlights:
It was a nice hotel--very well maintained and extremely comfortable beds. Our view of the falls was okay. Our view was obstructed by the Fallsview Casino and their large parking garage. Staff was friendly and accomodating.
Maid of the Mist/Journey Behind the Falls:
The Maid of the Mist was a spectacular ride and very highly recommended. You will get wet--but you probably could avoid that by standing on the lower level. We walked to Journey Behind the Falls after the boat ride--it is also impressive, but you can get the same effect by going on the Maid of the Mist.
Impressive building and lobby area. The buffet was okay--nothing spectacular, but they do offer a large variety of menu choices. The slots in the casino were extremely tight and could not compare to Vegas. However, it was nice to be in a smoke free environment.
Niagara on the Lake/Wine Route:
We visited three wineries--Chateau des Charmes (very nice, tour was very informative), Peller Estates and Jackson-Triggs. We were very impressed by the wineries. There are a number in the area and we only hit three of them. They were all quite busy--which was probably due to the Wine Festival and the weather being so nice.
Niagara on the Lake--We had lunch at the Buttery, which was a cute English Pub. The town has a number of cute shops and restaurants--but the streets were packed with tourists. I would recommend during this during the week, when it isn't so crowded.
Skylon Tower: This was probably the only bad part of our visit. We had dinner in the Revolving Dining Room. The food was good, but the seating was horrible. They literally pack people in--a table for four is cut in half, so couple have to seat literally next to each other. It was impossible to have much privacy--especially since it was our wedding anniversary. I was recommend requesting a booth--if I had known, I would have done that or made reservations elsewhere. The view from the observation deck is terrific.
Falls: The falls are breathtaking--we had a terrific time. The park around the falls on the Canadian side is beautiful and well maintained.
Border Crossing: Much easier than we anticipated. They only asked for our id's and what our plans were for our visit. It took a half hour to get back into the U.S., but again only asked for our id's and what items we bought during our stay. We were able to get a little much back with the GST Refund at the Duty Free Center--which was nice.
