O.k. I admit it; I'm lazy! I started searching to find a good hotel and quickly became overwhelmed by the info. So I'll take the easy way out and hopefully get a personal response to my question.

My husband and I are new "empty nesters" with long weekend getaways planned, the first being to NOTL as we've heard only good things about it. We enjoy our wines and found many wineries in the area to visit. One of our fondest trips was to Mackinac Island and am hoping to find the same experience here.

We plan on a trip over our Memorial Day Weekend at the end of May. We aren't in to B&B's. It's been suggested that, if it's just the two of us, to stay somewhere close to NOTL to be able to enjoy the true ambiance of the trip?

Any suggestions from the natives? A good, close hotel near(est) NOTL? Any tips to make the trip that more enjoyable? I don't think we'll be heading this way again for a very long time and want to make this the most memorable for us as I can.

Thank you in advance!

Hi princess, and welcome to the Niagara on the Lake forum. You have picked a great time to visit Niagara since the Wine and Herb Festival will be on during the weekends in May.....that's the good news.

The not so good news is that things may already be getting booked up, so it will be best to make some decisions quickly about accomodations, and perhaps restaurant bookings. See:

We have two favourite properties in Niagara on the Lake region. One is the Riverbend Inn which is on the Niagara Parkway, just on the town's outskirts and next to Peller winery. It is an inn without all the trappings of a larger hotel (like a fitness centre) but we really love the ambience there.

In the town proper, within walking distance of the shops etc are several properties, which are all listed on the hotels page. Queen's Landing is one of the largest, and we've enjoyed our stays there. People rave about Harbour House, but in the summer it's in a busy spot next to the Whirpool Jet Boat offices. Both locations are great though for walking to the theatre or shops downtown.

The other area with stellar wineries that is still close to Niagara on the Lake, but offers a more intimate setting is in Jordan. It's a wonderful little town just 30 minutes from Niagara on the Lake, and almost the same distance to the Falls. We love Inn on the Twenty

and the little village of Jordan with shops, antiques, a winery (Cave Springs) and the charm of a private inn.

A new property that I haven't stayed at yet but has been receiving good reviews is the Keefer Inn, about the same distance out from Niagara on the Lake in Thorold. f you check this site, will give you more details:

Your decision now may be limited a little by availability as I mentioned earlier.

As for restaurants, wineries and other ideas for your fabulous weekend away, I would browse this forum for past discussions as there is lots of information on all of the above.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the finer accomodations, and winery restaurants in the area. The no longer "hidden gem" for a wonderful dining experience is The Stone Road Grille.....hands down for a more casual atmosphere and excellent gourmet dining in Niagara on the Lake.

Hope that gives you some direction with your plans. :)
