Ottawa over New Years with kids - ideas?

We will be in Ottawa for 4 nights over New Years with our two kids ages 8 and 10. Looking online I can't seem to find out if much is happening over the holidays. Is there a family friendly New Years celebration somewhere? Any other ideas of things to do, places to see, restaurants to visit etc. would be fantastic. Our first time back in a long time and the kids first time ever. I know the canal is not likely to be open yet, but is there another outdoor rink anywhere?

Greetings, I'm sure the regular Ottawa advisors will chime in, but you are correct that online, information is missing. Obviously, the canal would be great, but year to year the opening and closing dates are up to the weather. We do have several great Museums (as you know), depending on your interests, this is an option. Skiing? Again, depends on snow, but the Gatineau Hills are usually good to go that time of year. Hockey game? Tour of Parliament? The new outdoor rink at City Hall, Laurier Ave may be open?

I guess it depends on where you are staying?

From Dec 28, 2011 to Jan 1, 2012 is the Bell Capital Cup:

http://www.bellcapitalcup.ca/

This is no less that the top minor hockey tournament on the planet for Atom and Peewee (8 - 12 year olds). High level teams from all over the world attend. Last year was China, Finland, Germany to name just a few.

If your kids are at all into hockey... go check out a AAA game !

There is an annual Family New Year's eve celebration in the west end of Ottawa. The outdoor ice rink at Ben Franklin Place where the party is held is refrigerated so likely will be in use unless it is raining.

Frugal Fun Ottawa is a good source for Family Friendly events. Keep watching for updates and check the blog for weekend round ups.

The Blue Man Group is playing at the NAC over the holidays, and I believe there is a performance on New Year's Eve.

The Governor General holds a News Year Day Levee each year and children are more than welcome. This is on New Years Day.

Also on New Years is The Big Chill- Polar Bear Swim at Brittania Bay, maybe not for your family but you can still be a spectator.

The lights will still be lit up through the region.

The museums are great for the kids and will have lots of ongoing programming since the children are out of school. Don't miss the Children's Museum at the Museum of Civilization. Even your older child will really enjoy it.

The Science and Technology Museum is also a hit with kids. It is located on St. Laurent Blvd., south of the downtown area.

Ben Franklin Place hosts the family New Years party in the city.

Skating at Ben Franklin Place or at Festival Plaza (new rink being built, hopefully open by then). Still too warm for the canal. The rink at the Governor Generals doesn't open until Jan 6.

Thanks for all of the hints and tips so far... any really neat restaurants to take the kids to while we are there?

There are no 'children's restaurants' such as Chucky Cheese or Rainforest Cafe, in Ottawa. You could do Dim Sum in Chinatown (Somerset Street just off Bronson has a couple of large places) which is popular with children as they get to choose what they want to eat.

No Chucky Cheese for our kids...though they do like the Rainforest. Might try Chinatown, a take out noodle box eaten on a bench was the highlight of their trip to Victoria this past summer! Thanks for the tips.
