Sugar Shack on the way to Ottawa from Montreal

There seem to be a lot of sugar shacks so it's hard to know which are good and which are bad.

We are leaving Montreal on March 30th and would like to stop at a Sugar Shack on the way to Ottawa.

3 teenagers + 2 parents

Thanks

I`m not sure what would make a sugar shack bad.

Try this place, www.sucreriedelamontagne.com/eng/index.php

At the end of March, the new flow of syrop may not be ready, as it depends n the temperature -- above 0 during the day and below 0 at night. Last year it was mid-March, but you never know.

If you Google: cabane a sucre in Gatineau, you find many of them. For example, outside of Papineauville, on the north shore, you have Brazeau, then near Masson you have one at L'Ange Gardien. Most of them have been offering maple product and meals(pan cakes, sausages, beans...) with maple syrop, for decades so it is difficult to go wrong.

It seems like they are all about the same.

I guess whichever is convenient in our travels.

Thanks.

I have copied this from a post a year ago by "wine" on the same subject. For a website that identifies various maple syrup camps in the area, see:

http://ottawastart.com/sugar-bush.php

I visited the sand road camp in Moose Creek, Ontario last year. Thought it was quite good and reasonably economical. They have an all-you-can-eat buffet. Not all of them do. If you have 3 teenagers the buffet could be quite a canny investment. That's just off the "Ontario" road between the two cities. However for general tourism you might be better off taking the "Quebec" road and stopping around Papineauville. That would permit a visit to parc omega and/or the Papineau manor house, depending on taste.

abk190 reference is excellent. The day temperatures are going up slowly, to the lower 40F. The snow cover on the ground is good this year. So, it looks quite good for the end of this month. I will keep you posted as to when the sap starts running.

There's also one right in the middle of Ottawa, the only urban sugar shack in Canada:

Update The sap has not starting running. However, this week they forecast in the mid-30 to 40 F, during the day, so it should be good. However, if they have no new syrup, they can always use least year's supply or buy some from last year.
