driving from Wisconsin

My family and I are flying to Greenbay for Christmas vacation from there we are driving to Canada. We plan on staying in Sault Ste. Marie overnight and Thunder Bay. Would anybody have any recommendations on where to stay, eat, and sight-see? Any tips?

As far as Thunder Bay goes take a look at the Visit Thunder Bay Website. It might give you some good ideas.

One of the nicer full service hotels in Thunder Bay is the Valhalla Inn however there are lots of others to choose from (White Fox Inn, Travelodge etc. etc.) We also have a few Bed & Breakfasts if you are interested in that.

As far as eating out one of our landmarks is the Hoito Restaurant which has Finnish & Canadian cuisine .It is a very casual restaurant and very often you will have to wait for a table because it is that popular. Another up a coming popular restaurant is Joe's on Arthur which I have heard good things about.

For evening dining a popular restaurant is The Prospector which has fabulous prime rib however again we have many other restaurants to choose from as well (Gargoyles Grill, Armondo's etc. etc.)

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

How long will you be in Thunder Bay? What kinds of activities does your family enjoy? In addition to the other excellent suggestions above, you might also try a sauna at Kangas' and eating a persian (like a donut with icing) at The Persian Man. Driving around the city at night, looking at the Christmas lights and decorations, is fun (this is a small city, so an hour is lots). There's lots to do, see and eat here, depending on what your interests are.

Hope you are a "very experienced" winter driver(?). . .

22 hour round trip around the lake (?) = you could quite possibly experience some "extreme" winter driving conditions, or not, depending upon "totally unknown" weather conditions?

do you enjoy driving on limited visibility winter roads with high tractor/trailer traffic?
