Driving from Boston to Toronto

We're planning a long drive from Boston to Toronto in October and just wondered if there was anywhere anyone could recommended of interest to stay for a few nights to break the journey up. We thought about Montreal but to be honest are staying in 2 other cities on our trip and wanted something a bit different (maybe a national park, lake etc) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My husband and I are traveling from North Attleboro to Toronto in August. We are planning on staying a night in Utica, NY (about 4 hrs. 10 mins.) or Syracuse which is just less than 5 hours into the trip. We're probably going to end up in Syracuse for the night so we only have about 3 more hours to Toronto (not counting customs stop).

Hi helenmb20;

About a ½ way between Montreal and Toronto is the town of Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY), the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". From there you can take a boat tour of the 1000 Islands.

www.ganboatline.com/

They offer 1 hr, 3 hr, and 5 hr tours. The 5 hour tour stops at Boldt Castle, which was built in 1900 by the former owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. If you wish to walk about the island and tour through the castle, you will need to clear U.S. Customs, as the island is in American waters. Be sure that you bring your identification as required.

If you decide to stay in Gananoque overnight, I strongly recommend the Islandview Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is located only 1 block from where the tour boats dock, and the St Lawrence River.

A note to ChrissyRob;

The drive from Syracuse to the border is about 2 hours, and from the border to Toronto is about the same. I would estimate your drive from Syracuse to Toronto will be closer to 5 hours if you include the time at the border, and a quick bathroom break.

Rescue Team- Is there anywhere else you recommend we stay so that the drive isn't quite that long to Toronto in morning. The whole point of us staying in Syracuse was to significantly shorten our trip, but it doesn't sound it is the best option.

We've done the drive to Boston from Toronto and there is really no reason to go the Montreal/Kingston route as it's significantly longer than going through NY.

We like the Finger Lakes area in upper NY state which is just southwest of Syracuse but only about 20 minutes off the interstate. Very picturesque. Someplace like Seneca Falls would be about 5.5 hrs into the 9 hr journey. Or you could go a little farther to Canandaigua, leaving a 3 hr drive to Toronto.

The Sonnenburg Gardens are gorgeous, and you're right on the Lake.

Hope that gives you another idea. :)

Hi Everyone;

My post about Gananoque and the 1000 Islands was addressed to the OP, helenmb20, who was looking to break-up the long drive.

The added distance by entering Canada at the 1000 Island Bridge only adds 44 miles to the overall trip.

ChrissyRob;

You need to decide on how long you are willing to drive on your first day. Once you have that figure in mind, come back to the forum with that information and perhaps we can be of assistance.

Best Regards

Rescue Team- We're just going to stick with our original plan of staying in Syracuse since 5 hours is a good amount of time in the car. We'll deal with the 4 hour + drive to Toronto the next morning.

Thanks for your help. Sorry if I offended you.
