Porter- Car Rental

We booked flights with Porter for the first time. We never thought that there would be no Car rental place. What do we do! We arrive at 22h25 on a Thursday night!

Any suggestions were to rent a car would be nice!

Hi,

in order to give advice we'll need a little more info.

Is it necessary to have a car that night?

Are you staying downtown, at least overnight? If so, where?

If not, where are you headed from the airport?

Give us a few more clues & we'll see what we can come up with.

Hi 40andTraveling,

Welcome to the TORONTO TRAVEL FORUM.

Hmmm… you are aware that Porter Air lands at a small airport (Billy Bishop Field) where Porter is the ONLY airline… it is also on an Island, in Downtown Toronto???

Photo – Billy Bishop / Toronto Island Airport (Photo taken from CN Tower) = …tqn.com/d/…island_airport_overhead.JPG

You get to the mainland from the Airport, via a Ferry (lol.. perhaps the world's shortest ferry ride at only 400 feet across the waterway)… and then you are right smack in the middle of Downtown TO…

Most people make the crossing conveniently using the Porter Airport Shuttle which will take you to the Royal York Hotel.

And indeed if you are staying in Toronto, then no need for a car what-so-ever (indeed you really DON’T WANT A CAR if you are in Toronto… BIG Headache… Expen$ive to Park, tons of Traffic, etc.

As BRUCE-AND-JOHN have said knowing more about your situation, needs & plans would be helpful in making recommendations / suggestions.

Cheers!

Hey, Arriving at 22:25 but we needed a car because we are going to Trenton which is 1h30 drive.

Taxi or Limo Service to Pearson would be how much? That is if the car rentals are open at this hour.

From the looks of it I don't think we will be flying with Porter again!

You might try Greyhound or Via rail to get from downtown to Trenton. Some Via trains stop in Belleville, but I don't think Trenton has a station. You could take a taxi from Belleville to Trenton - not sure about the rates, they may have flat rates. The next morning you could rent a car in Trenton.

There is also a bus from downtown (leaves from where the Porter bus will drop you off I believe) out to the airport, where I think the car rental outlets may still be open. Should be easy enough for you to find out the hours of the car rental agencies at the airport.

Hi,

OK, it sounds like you're planning to head straight to Trenton that night. We haven't checked the Via Rail schedule, but we doubt that there would be a train departing to the east that fits your late arrival. Downtown rental agencies all close up around 9:00PM. It seems like your only option is to get out to Pearson. We checked Enterprise car rental (our favourite) and they will be closed. Budget, however is open till 1:00AM.

You have a couple of options to get there.

1. Take the free Porter shuttle to the Royal York Hotel, then grab the Airport Express bus leaving from that same hotel. Here's their schedule:

www.torontoairportexpress.com/schedule.php

This will set you back about $44 (for 2 of you)

2. Take a cab straight from the island airport terminal to Pearson- probably in the range of $50- 55 for 2 of you. For an extra $10 a lot more convenient.

We noticed when we checked Budget's website they're sold out at Pearson for today, so best to not leave it last minute.

Here's the link to the section here on TA (to the right on this page) with all the instructions on getting from Pearson to downtown. It's pretty much the same for the reverse direction.

Good luck & let us know how things work out.

No Problem!

One additional thing we thought of: to save the cabfare back downtown from Pearson at the end of your visit, ask when you reserve the car if you can drop it off downtown. Budget has a branch at 161 Bay St., which is just 2 blocks from the Royal York where you'll pick up the free Porter shuttle. They might charge you a fee, but it's bound to be cheaper (& way more convenient) than a cab from Pearson.

Unless you have to be in Trenton why not stay in Toronto overnight and drive to Trenton the next morning? Even if you could have rented a car from the island airport you would be arriving in Trenton well after midnight. By the time you get to Pearson, get a car and get going on your journey it's going to be the early hours of the morning.

Porter flights from Moncton make a stop in Ottawa before heading to Toronto. I think you'd actually get to Trenton sooner if you got off in Ottawa, rented a car at the airport there, and made the 3.5 hour drive to Trenton, rather than spending another 1.5 hours flying to Toronto, at least 45 minutes getting up to the main airport, and making a 2 hour drive to Trenton from there.

We traveled from Boston to Toronto with Porter for the first time on Saturday, Dec 17, 2011. We enjoyed the flight (short lines, new plane, extra leg room, good service).

We had pre-booked a rental car with Hertz so that we could drive to Hamilton. On arrival in Toronto we saw no signage or other information as to how to access the car rental agencies.

We took the shuttle bus to the Royal York and were directed by hotel staff to go across the road to Union railway station where we found the Hertz desk. After checking in we were instructed to walk two blocks to find the car three levels underground (all of this while dragging/carrying our luggage) . The directions we were given were confusing (which elevator to use, wrong car location number). 90 minutes after arriving in Toronto we were finally on our way to Hamilton in the rental car.

Perhaps we should go back to using Air Canada into Pearson? (long lines, cramped leg room, poor service).
