I thought it would be useful to start a thread in which locals and knowledgeable visitors could share suggestions for fun, free things to do in our city (emphasis on free!).
I'll kick it off by recommending the monthly Yorkville Art Gallery Walk, which is held the first Thursday evening of each month (except January).
The Gallery Walk is a series of free, guided tours that visit participating art galleries in the Yorkville district. The tours get underway from The Rotunda in the Hazelton Lanes shopping centre at 6:30 pm sharp, and continue until approximately 8 p.m. Gallery Walk participants typically are divided into three separate groups, and a guide leads each group to four or five different galleries in Yorkville. Gallery owners great each group and usually give a very brief talk about their collections, highlighting of course any special artists being featured in their gallery. Occasionally some of the featured artists are on hand to speak about their work and answer questions, too (some galleries try to schedule show openings to coincide with the Gallery Walk). Gallery Walk participants are then given time to browse the galleries at their own pace before being led to the next stop on the tour.
The tours are fun both for art afficionados and even for people who don't know anything about art, but who are keen to see work by established and emerging artists from Canada and throughout the world. They're also a great way to visit some of the chic Yorkville galleries that might otherwise seem too intimidating to enter!
If you don't want to visit the Yorkville art galleries as part of a Gallery Walk, you can still do a tour on your own. On the first Thursday of each month, the participating art galleries all remain open until 8 pm.
This month's Gallery Walk takes place tomorrow (May 4), while the June walk will take place on June 1.
By the way, Gallery Walk participants receive free parking at Hazelton Lanes. Coupons for the parking are distributed to Walk participants by the tour guides.
Looking forward to reading other suggestions for free things to do in Toronto!
