Toronto/Niagara Falls - January 2015

Hello all,

I will be in TO for 8 nights in January and as a solo traveller was planning on splitting my trip up as follows :-

4 nights TO

2 nights NF

2 nights TO

I've booked hotels for my entire stay so far however I am flexible with regards to my last 4 nights for the simple reason I am not sure if 2 nights might be too long down in NF. I plan to be in NF on a Tuesday/Wednesday night. Is NF busy midweek in January? I like a good drink and was hoping to go round a few bars but I was hoping for some advice as to whether there'd be much of an atmosphere around the town midweek or if 2 nights in NF might be too long and I'd be best doing 1 night and then going back to TO for the remainder of my stay. Any advice with regards to NF in January would be greatly appreciated.

Thabk you in advance.

Kindest regards,

Scott

NF will not be busy in mid January. It is mid mid-winter and there will be a lot of snow in NF. Most of the outdoor attractions will be closed. I would say that 2 nights there is too much. Remember that Toronto-NF and back journeys will also depend on the weather of the day. NF is in the snow belt and gets a lot of snow, much more than Toronto.

Two nights will feel on the long side unless you like gambling at the Casino and or there is a show at the Casino that you will want to see...

Thanks very much for anybody who took the time to reply. Based on your kind recommendations I've altered my plans and will stay only one night in NF. It also looks like I'm gonna need to invest in some snow boots aswell. We don't have these problems here in Ireland.

Hello, Scott H.

You didn't mention how you plan on getting to NF. I caution you that hiring a car would not be the best choice if you have never driven in very snowy/icy conditions, especially on the other side of the road! We can get some dangerous snowstorms in January, when even Canadians don't want to drive. If you look at the right hand side of the screen you'll see the question How do I get from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Hi Carobs,

Thanks for the kind advice, however I did factor that in and I'm just going to junp on the Greyhound or Megabus to save me any hassle & also save some Canadians to have to deal with a mad Irishman sliding all over the freeways. The Megabus seems to be the cheapest at approx. $20 therefore I can't really argue with that.

You'll also need more than snow boots. I hope you're already aware of how bitterly cold it can get here in January. Think of Moscow in winter.

Is it really that bad in both TO & NF every January urbanfoodie? I have a friend in TO but thought last years polar vortex was a freak?

Plan for about -10C and blowing. If it's warmer, that's the exception, unfortunately.

That's fine I was hoping for that to be honest. I wanted something different and to see TO and NF in the snow.
