Toronto where to stay & what must be seen

We are from the UK and will be driving up from NY via PA and the Falls to Toronto late August 2014. We will travel on to Ottawa as one leg of a 1500 mile tour of USA and Canada. It would be most helpful to have advice about where to stay with easy train access into the city if this would be better than driving into the City to see the sights. We do not have a set time to spend in the City but generally find we can get a good taste within two days. As we tend to spend few days in any one area, we generally look for motels or B&B.

Here is a link to B&Bs in Toronto. As you can see in the map, most of them are located in the city core and will have good access to public transportation.

If you plan is to spend only two days here, you should stick to downtown for sightseeing. Places like CN Tower, Toronto Islands, Harbor front, ST. Lawrence market, business district, University of Toronto, the museums and art galleries are all in the downtown area and are very easily accessed through public transit.

With only 2 days you're better off staying right in the city ... staying outside would require too much valuable time taken up by traveling in and out. Staying in a B&B in one of the neighbourhoods bordering the downtown core is a great way to see the way Torontonians live, as opposed to hotels in the core ... look for locations in areas such as Cabbagetown, The Annex, Riverdale, etc. As noted above public transit is the way to travel around the city - bus, subway, streetcar - easy, efficient, and affordable.

As a general rule we recommend a stay of 3-4 nights to see the city ... much depends on your interests ... take a look at the Top Questions to right of page, and the green activity tabs across top. Tell us what your interests are in terms of culture, nature, history, tourist attractions, food, etc. That way we can narrow down it down a bit more.

Thank you both. aviniam's suggestions of places to see will do us fine. I have bookmarked some B&B's from phpr's suggestion. We will not know until a few days before, when we will arrive.

Maybe we will stay in Cabbageville!! We must find why it has such a name. I see several street names from the Uk, I lived on Dundas St. in Sunderland UK.

Seeing the way Torontonians live will be one main objective. My Chinese wife will check out your China Town!

Will give you and idea how we pop in and out of places, spending longer if the need arises.
