does public transport exist on PEI?

Hi, We are coming to Pei in September and as we don't drive (and have heard that public transport is basic) we are wondering if it is possible to get around the island in other ways. thanks

The entire population of the island is a little over 100,000 people (i.e. not very many to support public transport). What I have read here in these forums is that there is a basic system in Charlottetown, and little or none elsewhere. There were similar questions on this forum in the last few weeks - you could searching for those topics - use the search box just above and to the right of the list of messages.

Please see the "Public transportation on PEI" discussion that is a little down the list.

Getting around Charlottetown isn't a problem - taxis and some bus servive. There are also organized tours from Charlottetown that can take you to see the outlying areas of the Island. At least one of the tour companies also offer a "car for hire" service if you are looking to hire a car and driver for a day to take you around to see the sights.

But if you are conteplating staying outside of Charlottetown, it is a bit of a different matter. If you are looking to relax and kick back for a few days, you could stay in the Cavendish area and get around OK. But most other area of the Island require a car.
