Tips for tour through Quebec including Gaspé with family?

Dear Canada fans,

Our family of 4 (boys aged 14 and 11) would like to spend 13 days of our Canada vacation in Quebec. Our main focus is natural beauty and dramatic scenery. The boys fancy having a swim, too. We would like to visit the Gaspé peninsula and would like to include 2 other Quebec parks in our trip to break the distance from and to Toronto. The last park should be in driving distance to Toronto.

Whale-watching at Tadoussac is not at our list, since we were lucky to see several whales during our trip to West Canada.

Does anyone have tips as to which parks to visit and especially which places to plan overnight stops for how many days? Are there any nice hotels or B&B's you could recommend for a family (medium budget)?

For Gaspé, we thought about visiting the park BIC, Gaspé National Park, Park Forillon, Percé and Bonaventura, but we are unsure how much time we' ll need for the various regions.

Our first ideas are as follows:

(First days Niagara region, than 1000 Island tour at Guananoque and drive to Parc de la Mauricie)

day 1 Parc de la Mauricie

day 2 Parc de la Mauricie, drive to Quebec

day 3 Quebec

day 4 drive to Gaspé peninsula

day 5 -11 Gaspé Pensinsula (where to stay?, which route to take?)

day 12 drive to St Jacques Cartier (or other park)

day 13 St Jacques Cartier

day 14-16 drive to and stay in Toronto

We are really looking forward to your tips. Thanks in advance!

Ines

I would skip Parc de la Mauricie and spend more time in Gaspe Peninsula instead. My favorite parcs are Parc du Bic and Forillon. You will most probably end spending a couple of days around Perce and Bonaventure.

You can continue on the North Shore once you pass Quebec City and cross to the South shore by ferry at St Simeon. You have two great parcs in Charlevoix: Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie and Grand-Jardins. For Quebec provincial parks look at www.sepaq.com.

Going back to Toronto two great Ontario Parks are Presquile and Sandbanks, both on the lake Ontario between Kingston and Toronto.

Well I am happily surprised to see that a fairly new member, Kent2780, had almost the same thoughts that I had!

I would also suggest skipping Mauricie and Jacques Cartier and instead head directly to Québec City from Toronto (a good 9 hours + driving time, not counting the traffic on the Montreal Island). One of the 2 parks in Charlevoix could follow, although the Saguenay Fjord (which is also a park) could be another option. Then cross the Saint-Lawrence and start your journey in the Lower Saint-Lawrence and Gaspé Peninsula regions.

If I had figured it right you were planning on 6 nights in both of these areas (see www.bonjourquebec.com to check the respective boundaries of these regions) so then you should do Ferry + Bic one day and drive a bit farther down the road. A stop in Reford Gardens in Métis-sur-Mer would also be interesting.

Then a leisurely day long drive with stops could bring you to the gates of Forillon and at least one full day of visit there will be necessary. Then go to Percé where you could spend around 3 nights/2 full days to go to Bonaventure Island and explore the area.

The Chaleurs Bay side of the Peninsula has less dramatic scenery so you could easily drive all the way back to Rimouski with a possible visit to Miguasha Park and also a possible dip in the ocean as only the Chaleurs side of the Peninsula has warm enough water to make it possible to get into the water.

Well actually you could change this itinerary a bit and visit the Parc du Bic on your way back to Toronto. Then you could stop to the Bic on the way to TO and just rent a motel on the road “en route” to Toronto. Next day, while ending your journey, you could also make a stop to take a cruise in the 1,000 Islands.

If you stop to Parc de la Mauricie ( a parc I love and visit every year for 30 years now) rent a canoe and go on Wapizagonque lake. They rent canoe by hour, half day or day including inflatable vests. Then take a hike on sentier des cascades, where you just sit in the middle of the little falls with water surrounding you. Kids and grown ups still love it! When you go in gaspe peninsula if you have enough time I suggest you stop in Parc de la Gaspesie for a day and hike mont Albert where you will have a scenery unique in the world (it's a 6 hour roundtrip hike) or hike Jacques Cartier mount easier walk with beautiful scenery where you can usually spot caribous. You can stay in the park camping or at gite du mont albert, a very, very nice hotel with spa and pool and five star cuisine. Go see their website www.sepaq.com/pq/gas/index.dot?language_id=1

Dear All,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I started replanning now, exchanging Parc de la Maurice and J. Cartier for the Charlevoix region. Including our drive back to Toronto we have got 14 days available. Would this tour make sense?

Day 1 City of Quebec

Day 2 Drive to and stay in Charlevoix region (where to stay?)

Day 3 Charlevoix region

Day 4 Charlevoix region

Day 5 Drive to Gaspesie: St. Anne de Montes (overnight stay or in the park?)

Day 6 Parc de la Gaspesie (stay St. Anne or in park?)

Day 7 Coastal trip to Parc du Forillon (stay)

Day 8 Parc du Forillon (stay)

Day 9 Trip to Perce via Gaspe (stay)

Day 10 Perce (stay)

Day 11 Perce/Bonaventura (stay)

Day 12 Trip to Parc du Bic via Carleton (swim)

Day 13 Parc du Bic, drive direction Toronto

Day 14 drive to Toronto.

Including the drive from Quebec we have planned to stay 3 days in the Charlevoix region. What could we visit in this time? Or shall we skip one day there in favor of the further day in Gaspe?

Thank you so much for any tips!!!

In parc de la Gaspesie I suggest you stay in the park at "Gite du Mont Albert"

In the Charlevoix area if you have time go to part des grands jar dins and do hike the Mont du Lac des Cygnes. It is an easy walk but with beautiful scenery. You could see wildlife, usually bears, beavers sometimes, deers, gray jays etc...At the top there is often a naturalist hired by the park giving explanation on nature all around and the view of the lake is nice. www.sepaq.com/pq/grj/index.dot?language_id=1

In Charlevoix area there is also Ile aux Coudres, you take a ferry to get there, you can fit old mill, or rent a bike and discover the marine scenery.
