Trip suggestions

My husband and I are travelling from Montebello Quebec to Lake Placid. We are active retires who love exploring interesting villages, quaint B&Bs with great breakfasts, art, antiques, hiking, and great food. We have 6 days Sept 26 - 31st. We are open to short side trips off the direct route if worth it. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Whatever the end date I think that is more useful giving some other kind of information.

So if coming from Montebello then you could do a detour by Mont-Tremblant. The atmosphere is far from quaint, quite disneyesque in fact but it is interesting and the gondola ride to the top of the mountain will be nice then. Afterward the villages around aren't so quaint with the exception of Val David where you could stop for a few hours to visit some artisans shops and may be have an old fashioned Québécois lunch at Le Petit Poucet.

Then Montréal and afterward you can decide to spend some time in the Eastern Townships which has a better ratio of quaint villages. Here's the tourism website: http://www.easterntownships.org/

You could plan some of the Townships and then Vermont or only Vermont and then New York State.

Considering that you have the time, Mont Tremblant would be worth the detour especially when the leaves are turning. Another detour that is pleasant is heading south of Montreal to Stowe Vermont by going through Smuggler's Notch. The Von Trapp Family (Sound of Music) have an Inn near Stowe which is very nice. If not staying there, a dinner is well worth it (and not high priced). Then you can head south and cross to Lake George then to Lake Placid. Stick to the small country roads for pleasant little villages.
