is it worth going to Montreal in mid march 2008

looking for some suggestions to assist with travelling to Montreal in March.

is the weather a big issue?? We would want to get out and about and look at some historical and heritage places, local places of interest and surrounding areas.

The answer to your question would depend on what you would consider to be a "big issue". The weather will likely be on the cool side (though probaly not frigid cold by Canadian standards). There'll probably be snow on the ground, but you'll likely miss out on any major snowstorms (although nowadays, you never quite know with the weather).

There are plenty of historical and heritage sites that you'll be able to take in while in the city during mid-March.

March-April are the worst months, I'd say, to visit Montreal. It's warmer than now, but that means the snow melts, so instead of seeing nice pretty clean white stuff (or nice green trees and grass and flowers and such), you see brown grass, leafless trees, and dirty streets from all the salt and rocks they put on the sidewalks all winter so we can actually walk around. In late April, the flowers start coming out, the grass turns green, and they do a big clean-up and the city becomes beautiful again.

That said, it's still a great city to visit, even in March. It's very easy to get around, and it's architecturally the most interesting city in Canada, I'd say. Old Montreal is the most historic, a wild mixture of 18th century residential, converted Victorian warehouses, some very grandiose commercial buildings, and even a few hideous skyscrapers. Surrounding downtown are other great neighbourhoods, with Le Plateau easily winning the race for beauty and being so very very hip. Lots of small shops, cafés, narrow residential streets with quaint and quirky houses...

Don't forget about spring break and Easter... I think many students will be in town for some partying during that time. might be worth taking a closer look at your dates.
