Best place to stop & stay between Montreal & Quebec City?

Putting together a last minute 12 day trip to Montreal, Quebec City and other destinations tbd beginning on June 26th. So, much to do in a lot less time than we usually take to plan our travels. I've booked the first three nights in Montreal, thinking of visiting the eastern townships -- but not sure if we should stay over or just drive from Montreal -- THEN, will be driving to Quebec City. Do you recommend stopping and staying somewhere along the route? We are particularly interested in unique and authentic culture -- nothing touristy. Thanks very much.

Well, if you have the time, the Eastern Townships are very pretty indeed -- it's a little more European in scale in terms of little villages here and there... some are quite cute, but not as beautiful as their European counterparts. Since you have the time, I would suggest staying over in the Eastern Townships -- there are small B&Bs found throughout in old farmhouses and such, so well worth a slower-paced vacation of taking the backroads rather than the freeway between the two cities.

There are quite a few suggested routes to follow throughout Québec -- for the Eastern Townships, there's the Wine Route at www.bonjourquebec.com/qc-en/routevins0.html or perhaps the Townships Trail at bonjourquebec.com/qc-en/chemincantons0.html

12 days is actually long enough to include quite a few extra things in your trip -- I say check out the Charlevoix region, since it's the most impressive nature in all of Eastern Canada with mountains plunging down to the fjord of the Saguenay or the majestic Saint Lawrence.

Also think about making a side trip to Ottawa, too -- it's a strange city, since it's a government town so a little boring (which Québec is, too, actually), but it has some very impressive museums and monuments and squares and such. As a city, it's not as pretty or as well put together as Montréal or Québec in terms of architecture or urban fabric, but then it has a huge amount of incredibly beautiful parkland with the river and the canal and some very impressive residential neighbourhoods. It's not the kind of city that impresses immediately, but more one that you need to wander around a bit to see that it would be a very nice place to live.
