There are 4 or 5 pastry shops in Chinatown that will have them, but from what I can tell, they're all about the same. I'd check out the one at the corner of Saint-Urbain and de la Gauchetière to see if he has a particular take on them, since he puts a little more effort into his pastries than the other ones. However, if special mooncakes exist beyond the standard ones, I doubt we have them here. Alas, Montréal is not particularly well stocked in terms of Asian food offerings.

As Tristou says, try the pastry shops in Chinatown. Otherwise, the groceries in Chinatown (or other ones spread around), will have them.

Do not assume that boxed mooncakes from a grocery are of lesser quality then a pastry shop. The fatty content makes them conserve a long time and many mooncakes are imported. Usually, the best ones are in a nice box, and not sold by the unit. This is because mooncakes are usually bought as a gift for the mid-autumn festival. Harmonie bakery will sell them individually though. Here is a chowhound discussion:

I disagree with Tristou's comment, we are very well stocked in chinese foods and ingredients, except contrary to what some believe, Chinatown doesn't have the largest variety in Montreal (just that it's centrally located downtown).

I actually have no problem with our Chinese grocery stores. As you said, Chinatown is tiny for a city our size, so there are many better grocery stores in other areas -- there are a few in my neighbourhood that are wonderful and have things fresh that I have only seen before frozen or canned.

It's restaurants and bakeries and Dim Sum that are fairly middle-of-the-road. Not bad, but nothing amazing either, and not a huge variety. But then, I grew up in Vancouver and my best friend was Chinese with a mother who was an excellent cook so I was very spoiled from a young age :)

Ok the chinese sweets side, i'll have to agree with you. Actually, aside from bakeries, we have NO chinese desert shop whatsoever. I mean places that specialise purely in serving several types of Tong sui or making their own rice balls.

We had those everywhere in Hong Kong :(

Younger people would substitute going out to bars to a trip to the desert shop!
