for flight to US, how early to get to Montreal airport?

Our flight leaves at 4:50 pm Monday afternoon. AIrport website says we should be there 3 hours prior to flight time to get through immigration. We will not have bags to check. I hate to cut it close, but do we really need 3 hours? Also, how long should we allow for a taxi to get to the airport, if coming from central Montreal? Thanks for your help.

Yes, but what does your airline say? That's what matters, not what the airport website may say. The airport wants to make sure you have lots of time to shop.

Air Canada's recommended check in time for a Canada US flight is 90 minutes. You should check your airline's website to see what their time is.

Doesn't the time depend on how long it takes to get through immigration?

Mid afternoon should not be overly busy unless it is a Friday. In this case I think that 2 hours is very safe.

US immigration is NUTS. I can get through check in and security in 15 minutes, and then stand in the mega long immigration line for 90 minutes. They are not fun at all and the wait seems to be made intentionally long by the US border gurads.

THree hours can be too much, but there have been times when three hours left us sprinting for the gate.

If your flight is at 4:50 i suggest leaving for the airport at 12:30 tops because between 1-2 traffic will start and if you're as unlucky as to get a high traffic day then you will be late.. If you leave at 12:30 you should be there for 1:15 which leaves you time to pass customs, get your boarding pass and all. And the US customs are very LONG to pass.. I had a friend who missed her flight no more than 2 weeks ago because of this and ended up getting to her destination the next day... Better be safe than sorry. Also, if you have no luggage it would maybe be cheaper to take the shuttle bus .
