Montreal to Boston Via Vermont. How?

Hi there.

Trying to figure out how the best way to get from Montreal to Vermont is, then Vermont to Boston. In Vermont we will be going probably to Newport. We are trying to view the early foliage as will be in NE around 3rd week september so want the best chance.

Anyway, I cannot find a way without Bus or Taxi to do this Montreal > Newport > Boston route. I also can't really find anywhere that is reasonable for car hire.

I am 23 years old, from the UK on a 3 month trip and very confused about how to make this happen. Trying to make it romantic for the girlfriend but it is proving difficult!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your best bet is likely to get to Rock Island (Quebec) and walk over the border to Derby Line (VT) and then either find one of the local shuttles or a taxi from Derby Line to Newport.

Hi UberJason;

First, your age is working against you when it comes to renting a car. The minimum age for "normal" rental rates is 25. Under 25's are charged a daily premium - about $25/day.

The second thing working against you is the cross border, one-way rental. The cost of one-way rentals is much higher than a regular rental due to the drop fees charged, as the vehicle must somehow be returned to the point of origin, towed if necessary.

Best Regards

Probably your best bet will be to change your plans and head to Burlington (VT) instead. You can take Greyhound from MOntreal to Burlington and then again from Burlington to Boston.

Does that allow us to see the foliage early, as in last week September?

Vermont is south of Montreal... you need to go north to see the foliage. And it's the weather that will determine when the foliage turns. But it's always delayed in Montreal by at least a week or two.

Aside from renting a car or getting a rideshare, the only real option is what others have said -- taking the Greyhound to Boston via Burlington, VT. Not sure what the previous post meant by needing to go north to see foliage... New England is famous for it. There's even a New England colloquial term for travelers interested in seeing the changing leaf colours: Leaf Peepers :) The foliage on the ride down is lovely. There is very little development on the 89 highway through Vermont and New Hampshire. Basically miles and miles of trees and scenic hills until you get on 93 and approach Boston. Late September and early October are the peak times for fall foliage in Vermont and New Hampshire. Greyhound can be annoying, but the route itself is really nice.
