Champlain Bridge

This is a question not only for personal reasons but for fellow travelers also. I just read that the Champlain Bridge, my normal route into the city when traveling up north, has lost 2 lanes due to cracks. I'm coming up Friday, leaving Monday, and am wondering just how bad it is and if I should explore an alternate route into the city. I know there is another bridge to the east but have only crossed it once coming back from Quebec City. Would it be easier to take the exit off Route 10 for the casino and come in from there?

Any thoughts would be apppreciated. Also, how long is this supposed to last? I'm sure my fellow American visitors would be interested to know if they are arrving by car.

Thanks

Yes the situation with the Champlain Bridge is bad. Mind you the two lanes closed are on the departing from Mtl side so if you arrive on Friday out of the rush hours it won't be so bad. Return you should look at Victoria Bridge which is closer than Jacques-Cartier Bridge. Note that Victoria Bridge being the oldest bridge on the Saint-Lawrence thus has no direct links with highways.

Thanks rickb. Is Victoria the one that heads over to the casino?

Well it goes over Notre-Dame Island but quite South of the casino. Jacques-Cartier has an exit for Sainte-Hélène and Notre-Dame Islands but it is farther north.

I just heard on the news that the traffic pattern has been redirected on Champlain with two lanes on each side which means a lot of traffic both ways.

I spent the week end between the South shore and Montreal and the traffic on the bridge was fine.

Thank you both. The Express reads like a horror story regarding the traffic which is the reason for my concern. We're getting in early enough on Friday that it might not be bad, and of course on Monday we are leaving so it will probably be fine once we're over the bridge. Unless I see or hear about a problem I think I'll take my chances.

But as I say if anyone hears of updates please post them as I know they'll be helpful for people outside the area who don't follow the local news like I do.

I was very surprised ...last Thursday night - rush hour... VIctoria Bridge was worse than Champlain to go back on the South Shore. Victoria was bumper to bumper and nothing was moving from the Bell Centre... and I turned around to take Champlain... and I was on the other side of the river within 30 minutes from downtown. (Most people were afraid of Champlain... and created a real messy situation at Victoria!)

Thank you. I just looked at what I wrote earlier. I meant the Montreal Gazette, not the Express. What was I thinking??? LOL!

Thanks again.

CBC News right now. This morning the traffic on Champlain was disastrous even if people knew in advance what awaited them. According to the journalist usually heavy traffic and slow down on that bridge starts at around 6h30 am while this morning it started at 5h30 and for most of the rush hours it took more than 1 1/2 hour just to cross the bridge. Seems that things are a bit less disastrous tonight going back to the South Shore but hey it is only 4h35 pm!

Friday afternoon going south on the Champlain was a gong show for sure. Backed up onto the Decarie. I took Atwater into Verdun and that was backed up too as people were trying to bypass the Decarie and cut through Verdun on to the 15 south.

I listen to CJAD 800 radio station as they have good traffic updates every 15 minutes, it does help me to get around the mess at times.

Avoid rush hours as much as possible.

bogwoppit, thanks for the radio info. I'll try to tune in as I get close. We're going to try to get in early afternoon so I can only hope it isn't too bad.
