Montreal for a wk in July

We are a family of 3 adults and are considering a week-long visit to Montreal during the jazz festival. While we're there, we hope to rent an apartment. We like art, little ethnic restaurants, strolling interesting neighborhoods, and of course jazz. A few questions . . . is a week too long? What area should we stay in? Any recommendations for interesting, unique places to visit?

Just a bit of warning about appartment rental. There are a lot of places that just spring up out of nowhere and are completely illegal. Lately the Québec Government has started cracking down on those so if you rent from AirBN, VRBO and such be extra cautious. You might end up at a place that doesn't even exist or that has been closed. The best way would be to go through the official Ministry of Tourism website bonjourquebec.com and look for lodging for less than 30 days.

As per one week it won't be too long at this time of the year, particularly if you go to the Jazz Fest but you can consider a day trip to Ottawa for a change of pace and, of course, a trip to Québec City although for that destination an overnight will be better.
