Customs Wait Returning to the US

My wife and I will be in Montreal next Monday to Thursday. I have heard horrow stories about 5 hour waits to get back into the US. What have people heard or experienced over the summer regarding customs? Also, any tips?

Going back to the U.S on a Thursday shouldn't be a problem. There more of a wait during a long weekend (Friday or Monday). Thursday shouldn't be a problem.

Get to the border early in the AM, and you should be fine. Try one of the Customs stations just to the east or west of I87 and you'll be fine. I have rarely waited more than 10 min at i-87, and have never had a wait of more than a car or two at Overton Corners.

If you have computer access in Montreal, check these online listings of border wait times before you leave:

http://apps.cbp.gov/bwt/

www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/general/times/menu-e.html

We've found them to be pretty accurate.

If a long wait time is listed, look for a smaller border crossing on a minor highway nearby. There are several near Champlain, N.Y., where we usually cross, and we rarely wait more than 5 minutes at the minor crossings.
