In Chicago it is bowling, 10 pin. The East coast of the US has "Candlepin" bowling as well as "duckpin" bowling Is there some odd, to me, "sport" that is played locally in Montreal?

The sport played locally is indeed hockey. It trumps everything else, although in fact, our official national sport is actually lacrosse. Which most people play in elementary school and then forget about.

Perhaps curling would respond to your curious criteria, and Montréal has the oldest one in North America -- in fact the oldest athletic club at http://www.royalmontrealcurling.ca although curling is hardly Montréal-specific; it's played all over Canada and indeed, in many countries.

If you wanted to do stuff that is unique, hmm.... perhaps ice skating at 1000 de la Gauchetière which is open year round. Or surf the permanent wave by Habitat 67 -- there's a video over at http://surfmtl.com if you scroll down.

La crosse no longer is our official sport, it is now hockey. It was changed a number of years ago. Many would say that there is nothing else than hockey but Montreal has other claims to fame when it comes to sports. Basketball was invented by a McGill professor. North America's oldest golf club is the Royal Montreal. I believe that our oldest curling sports has a similar claim - Tristou seems to know more than I do on this topic. Montreal has one if not the oldest tennis club in canada. At the Rogers cup last Sunday, Venus Williams gave many compliments to the city and this was in part because the organizing commitee, with an army of volunteers - some take a week of vacation to work at the event - ran a first class event (Venus said that Montreal is her favourite city in the world with Rome - nice compliment but perhaps she got carried away). She was very nice to the ball boys and girls and a class act, no wonder the crowd fell in love with her). There also is the F1 Grand Prix. Ecclestone cancelled the event one year and it was reportly the pilots who put pressure to reinstate the Montreal event, apparently one of the best town for F1 although i personally find this surprising.

...in truly Canadian fashion, we have two national sports, apparently, since 1994: lacross is our summer sport, and hockey is our winter sport.
