Attractions to see outside the walls

What are some of the recommended sights to see outside the walls of Old Town? We're planning on going to the waterfalls but aside from that, we're not sure what we'd like to do. We're looking for things both in QC and in the surrounding areas.

Thanks!

In Quebec city, you probably don't want to miss the part of rue Saint-Jean that's located west of the walls of Old Town. It's really one of my favorite places in town. You'll find many nice stores and restaurants there. Then you could end up on rue Cartier another lively street. Then I would make a left on Grande-Allée which is also lovely. I'd probably want to spend some time at the wonderful Plaines d'Abraham park. That'd be my idea for a great walk : )

If you like shopping, you won't want to miss the three big shopping malls in the Sainte-Foy area, on boulevard Laurier. Tons of stores.

±90 minutes east of Quebec, you'll find a beautiful small city called Baie-Saint-Paul. The road to Baie-Saint-Paul is breathtaking by moment. And if you make it there, you might want to end up at La Malbaie (less than an hour east of Baie-St-Paul). That's another nice place where there's a casino if you like to gamble.

I guess it all depends on what you like. For all I know, maybe I wrote all of this for nothing ; )

Not for nothing - I'm writing down those directions for the walk around rue St-Jean! Sounds terrific.

Just a short drive or tour bus trip outside the city are the beautful Ile D' Orleans, Montmorency Falls, and Saint Anne de Beaupre church.

We loved the Ile d'Orleans and visited it twice during our recent 8-day visit to Quebec City. It takes less than 20 minutes to travel there by car from the Chateau Frontenac and it is an absolutely idyllic place. There is a wonderful website; here is the link: http://www.iledorleans.com/eng/

For the nicest view over Château Frontenac and Québec City's skyline: take a short ride on the local ferry to the south shore, preferably early AM (when the sun reflects on the city) or at dusk. Ferry takes 10 minutes to cross the river, you may stay on it if you please, and there is one evry half hour during the day (hourly departures after 6:30).

You may get to l'Observatoire de la Capitale, athe top of the skyscraper next to the House of Parliament: 360 belvedere. See observatoirecapitale.org/english/f-english.h…

A great side trip for wildlife is Toudoussac. The drive from Quebec city there is along the St. Lawrence with quaint fishing villages along the way. The Saugeney Fjord, the only fjord in North America, has thousand foot solid rock cliffs with dramatic views. The whale watching here has beluga, minke, sperm, blue, finback, and humpbacks. There are also three kinds of seals and dolphin. There is a feeding frenzy for them here because of the effect of the fresh water and salt water mixing here. It's also the southern most area for seeing belugas. The countryside on the way is picturesque. You could sea kayak, ride a kodiak only 2 feet from the water's surface, or board a more touristy vessel with room for 200 and enjoy a meal on the way.
