New Year's Eve Dinner in Quebec City

My husband and I are staying at Auberge Saint-Antoine for a few nights in late December, and we are interested in finding a spot for dinner on New Year's Eve that doesn't offer the typical "it's New Year's Eve so we will limit the menu and charge you triple the price" concept. While the hotel's restaurant, Panache, looks nice, it is offering a $250 pp prix fixe (not including tax or service), and we really don't want to pay $700 for dinner. Any thoughts?

You did not mention what kind of budget yoo are comfortable paying.

Moderate: I suggest Café du Monde at the cruise terminal http://www.lecafedumonde.com/ambiance.asp , or Lapin Sauté http://www.lapinsaute.com/accueil.asp?lan=en . Both located within walking distance of your hotel. Charbon Steakhouse, inside the train station, might appeal to you . Upper Town: Pain Béni www.aubergeplacedarmes.com/indexresto_en.html

Splurge: the nearby Laurie Raphaël http://tinyurl.com/2c43dbg . Upper Town: Le St-Amour http://www.saint-amour.com/index.php?lang=en . Le Champlain, Château Frontenac's restaurant http://tinyurl.com/2bnot4x

Wherever you decide to go, I strongly recommend that you make your reservations asap.

I would rather stay at $300 or under. Ideally we'd like to do the more formal dinners before New Year's and then have a meal at a more informal spot (good food, quaint/cozy atmosphere) on NYE.

Hi Vahoo.

One place that comes to mind that has a quaint and cozy atmosphere, is a restaurant called Toast! I am not certain what their New Year's Eve schedule is, but it is definitely worth checking into. The food and service are both excellent and the ambience is really lovely. And unless they have something out of the norm...I am confident you can have a great meal there for your price range.

Good luck and hope this helps a little.

Hi there,

My fiancee and I are also staying at Auberge Saint Antoine in Quebec City for New Years Eve. We too found the prix fixe menu at Panache a little too extravagant (and too limited for picky eaters like myself!) I have researched a number of different restaurants in both upper and Vieux Quebec City and just can't seem to decide on THE location for a nice New Years Eve dinner and celebration. I was contemplating Le Charbon or Il Matto, but am still quite leary. Have you had any luck? Also, I was wondering if you have any insight regarding the rooms. We booked rather late and were only able to reserve a confort queen room. I am hoping this type of room is on par with some of the wonderful reviews I've read about the upgraded rooms. Yikes....I think Tripadvisor has turned me into an extremely picky and paranoid traveller!!

Hope you've had more success than I!!

Any suggestions would be welcome!!

OK , try this link

telegraphe.com/quebec/…indexen.html

I know most of these restaurants and they are mostly great. But I haven't been to any in more then a year.

The link above is a city guide with a restaurant section. The guide is english or french. Click upper right corner for language selection. Many have a link to their web site or phone number.

If nothing works don't worry, The area where you are staying has dozens of good restaurants.

I'll be in Quebec too celebrating with the family.

goldilocks93.

You can't go wrong at Charbon. I have dined there many, many times and always had a great dinner. It is a big place, but it still has an intimate atmosphere. It does get booked up quickly so don't wait too long if you decide on it.

Best wishes.

My best advice would to call the chef concierge at the St-Antoine, her name is Sandrine, she incredible. Tell her about your taste, your budget and she will find you the best place for you. Email or call her now, won't be disappointed.

I second Whitestoneny on the concierge. That's the best resourse to get insider views. Much better than what we can provide here for this kind of info.
