4 Days and 3 Nights in October and WE NEED ADVICE!

We have just booked a fllight from NYC to Montreal on a Friday morning October 7 - returning on the following Monday evening. Should we spend 1 night in Montreal and 2 nights in Quebec or should we just spend all three nights in Old Quebec? When we arrive at the airport, is there a bus or train to take us to Quebec? And what is a charming but luxurious place to stay in Quebec and/or Montreal?

We are leaning towards staying in one place but would love advice.

This is our first trip. Willing to splurge. We are an older and well-traveled couple. Thanks for any and all advice.

Since you are limited in time I would spend the 3 nights in Quebec City. Have you considered flying into Q.C. with a change in Montreal? The Chateau Frontenac is the place to stay in Q.C. The hotel itself is a tourist destination and is a Fairmont hotel (expensive). Others may weigh in wether the hotel is "charming".

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, the price to fly in to Quebec, changing in Montreal, is double the cost of the NYC/Montreal non-stop flight!

I'll check out the hotel.

If you haven't made firm reservations for your flight you should look at Porter Airlines. Since Mtl is the lesser destination for you (it seems) you won't mind so much a transfer in Toronto and no time in Mtl. I just checked and, from Newark to Qc, it cost less than $ 200 before taxes and other fees. Considering that a return trip by bus Mtl/Qc/Mtl will cost you more than $ 80 this is really a steal!

If you have firm reservations that you cannot cancel then I will suggest that you stay the first and last nights in Mtl and the middle night in Qc. The great thing about bus transportation between Montreal and Qc is that you have buses leaving every hours from very early in the morning to 10h30 pm every day and no advance reservations are required. Travel time is 3h30 so some good rest in Mtl on the first night will be welcome.

If price is really not a problem for lodging then you should consider the Gold Floors at the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac and join the Fairmont President Club to get more pampering.

In Montreal the crème de la crème will be Le Saint-James but there are many other boutique/designer options around Old Mtl. Fairmont has the Queen Elizabeth downtown, the largest hotel in Mtl, very good overall but really more of a business hotel.
