Northern lights in 2016 - Yellowknife or Whitehorse or ???

I know this is not predictable, but I assume someone on this board knows more than I do...I realize we kind of missed the boat regarding the max solar activity for northern lights, so the soonest we might be able go is Feb-Mar 2016.

Considering that the trip will be mainly to see the NL, what do you think our chances to see them are during a 5 days stay in that period? We are considering either Yellowknife or Whitehorse, but we are open to other suggestions, too. Thanks

In 5 days... my guestimate is 30% if up all night. Yellow is usually less cloudy and better located in the Northern Aurora Belt. Choose your dates to coincide with a new moon ;)

Thanks...30% is not that high...For 2016 new moon will be Feb 8 and Mar 8. Which one would you pick?

Most websites I see on the NL suggest a week minimum for your greatest chance for success and also the new moon...

We could push this to 6-7 days max...we'll probably do so to increase our chances.

I haven't watched Yellowknife weather in a long time, but I can tell you that we get fewer and fewer nights with clear skies in Whitehorse as the years go on. I administer a "Yukon Aurora Alert" page on Facebook, and maybe once a month we get people seeing the lights (only Yukoners can join, but I think anyone can see the posts). Most people who see them are leaving town to places above the low cloud layer when that is the situation, or elsewhere (an hour or so to the west is sometimes clear when Whitehorse isn't).

Thanks Murray, that's really helpful. Sorry to hear about the increased clouds...I wonder if Iceland or Norway would be a better choice to go...

We looked at this in detail a couple of years ago. While Iceland and Norway can get into the Aurora belt, you have to go very far north in Norway to get to it - and its a lot harder to get there. And its a lot colder.

Have a look at an aurora map, and you will see what I am talking about.

We went to Whitehorse for 3 days in 2013, and didn't see anything, so came back in 2014 for 5 nights, and had one night of success.

We also found that Whitehorse could supply good quality accommodation, and cold weather clothing. Yellowknife could not.

I've enjoyed my stays at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife - it's not cheap, but it is as good a quality as any place we have in Whitehorse.

I lived in the Yukon for 5 years and have worked there for over 10 years. (as well as NWT and Nunavut.

The only place I ever saw the Northern lights in 10 years was Dawson City area in October.
