Tipping Front Desk Hotel Staff in Oaxaca

We've been staying in a terrific hotel in Oaxaca for the week. The service has been outstanding. We've regularly tipped the hotel maid for cleaning our room. Should we tip the front desk staff on our departure? There is nothing specific to tip them for -- just that they've really been great.

Not something that would normally happen in Vancouver. Would it happen in LA? Guess anywhere in the world if you are impressed with service, recognition is a good thing.

It never hurts, if it won´t put a dent in the overall cost of your trip. Front desk staff don't earn very much, and often have two jobs in order to make ends meet. Of course chambermaids earn less. Our bilingual university educated daughter worked at a small downtown hotel as front desk day manager, and earned 8,000 pesos a month. She moved back to Canada; most in those jobs in Oaxaca don't have the luxury of choice. Just make sure you're not tipping the owner or his/or relatives! They generally have it pretty good and are in a different situation than outright staff.

And here's an article I wrote a few years ago relative to wages earned by front desk staff, albeit not all lodgings pay this little and as noted the article is somewhat dated (ie about 2008 or 2009): www.oaxacadream.com/articles/academic15.html

Alvin: Thanks again for your advice. Very helpful. I have never stayed at Casa Machaya, but plan to try it next time we are in Oaxaca.

Electricoutlet: The place we stayed this time with wonderful service was Hotel Palacio Borghese -- a small hotel on Calle Allende. I will write a full review in a day or two.

In fact, in a recent post someone was struggling with whether to stay in that hotel or Casa Oaxaca, so perhaps check out the thread which began last week and weigh in with your comments about Borghese, so as to provide some assistance. But if you expect Casa Machaya to be in that same class, it isn't, so perhaps stick with that level of luxury if you can afford it and like the scene in the heart of downtown.
