RENTERS BEWARE!!THRIFTY CAR RENTAL INSURANCE SCAM!!
Even if your Auto Insurance carrier or credit card provides insurance coverage when you rent in Mexico ... unless you have absolute proof of a specific coverage, for a specific amount, specifically stating coverage for Mexico - you will be charged an extra $14 - $16 a day for MANDATORY INSURANCE COVERAGE.
Additionally, your car may be in marginal condition. Ours had many, many "dings" and was seriously out of steering alignment.
You will be approached by time-share salespersons who are located IN THE THRIFTY BUILDING, immediately following your fleecing at the Thrifty counter. Nice touch!!!
Going to Playa del Carmen? Take the ADO bus! You can make reservations in advance on-line! They will meet you and take you to the bus, which will be right outside the terminal. Going to Cozumel. Take the ADO bus to the Playa Del Carmen station - right beside the pier and take the ferry over to Cozumel. Last I heard the bus was about ten bucks to Playa and the Ferry was twelve or sixteen to Cozumel.
Or take a shared shuttle service. The going rate to Playa Del Carmen should be about $85 for two (round trip).
Why get swindled by Thrify, worry about getting "Shaken down" by the Police, worry about driving directions, worry about vandalism to the rental car, and worry about parking in the wrong place and worry about finding a gas station?
Relax ... you are on vacation.
STAY AWAY FROM THRIFTY CAR RENTAL ... save yourself some money ... some grief ... and let someone else do the driving and the worrying!!!Edited: 02 April 2011, 04:34
