Do Not Rent From Thrifty Car Rental in Cancun!!! BEWARE!!!

RENTERS BEWARE!!THRIFTY CAR RENTAL INSURANCE SCAM!!

Even if your Auto Insurance carrier or credit card provides insurance coverage when you rent in Mexico ... unless you have absolute proof of a specific coverage, for a specific amount, specifically stating coverage for Mexico - you will be charged an extra $14 - $16 a day for MANDATORY INSURANCE COVERAGE.

Additionally, your car may be in marginal condition. Ours had many, many "dings" and was seriously out of steering alignment.

You will be approached by time-share salespersons who are located IN THE THRIFTY BUILDING, immediately following your fleecing at the Thrifty counter. Nice touch!!!

Going to Playa del Carmen? Take the ADO bus! You can make reservations in advance on-line! They will meet you and take you to the bus, which will be right outside the terminal. Going to Cozumel. Take the ADO bus to the Playa Del Carmen station - right beside the pier and take the ferry over to Cozumel. Last I heard the bus was about ten bucks to Playa and the Ferry was twelve or sixteen to Cozumel.

Or take a shared shuttle service. The going rate to Playa Del Carmen should be about $85 for two (round trip).

Why get swindled by Thrify, worry about getting "Shaken down" by the Police, worry about driving directions, worry about vandalism to the rental car, and worry about parking in the wrong place and worry about finding a gas station?

Relax ... you are on vacation.

STAY AWAY FROM THRIFTY CAR RENTAL ... save yourself some money ... some grief ... and let someone else do the driving and the worrying!!!

Oh yeah, my $62 dollar rental was $165!!

The mandatory insurance and a whopping 26% taxes are not included in your total when you reserve your car on-line!

Don't do it!!! Stay away!!!

So .. let me guess you work for Thrify?

Or you are just another callouse smart mouth? I am sure you are really a pleasure to be around and have great friends and family. You being an expert on Mexico and all.

I .... can handle adversity ... rude morons on the Trip Advisor forum, like you, for example.

Being swindled ... is another matter. I think we'll spend our money in Florida from now on ...

Thanks for the kind words. Have a nice day!

I agree. Don't rent from Thrifty or any company. For the vast majority of people, renting a car is not worth the hassle. That being said, it shouldn't make you avoid Mexico.

Also, You may want to ask some questions about car rental next time. Us morons here on TA may be able to teach you something but you actually have to ask first.

Amazing. Do you really expect renting a car in Mexico to be the same as renting in the US or Canada.

You need to get used to traveling in a different country and culture.

Get over it.

Obviously all you EXPERTS don't need to read this.

"Duckbilled" you are right ... I should have asked on the forum to get some advise! I would not have rented a car at all. This was not my first time to Mexico ( say fifteen times in the past two years) ... but first time to rent a car. I was going to say that I should have made "morons" singular to " a moron," but then I read jeanh's post.

A last minute schedule change allowed for an "inpromtu" trip. We were considering St. Johns, since we loved it the most from a previous visit. But we decided on Playa - because we had enjoyed it from a previous visit. We scheduled the hotel and car the night before and we on the flight the next morning.

Jeanh ... I am over it. I have learned my lesson. I won't rent a car in Mexico again! The post wasn't for me to vent. It was to keep others from making the same mistakes. Get it?

The whole point of my post ... is to make others, like myself, who were not aware of the cost and complications of driving in Mexico able to better weigh the actual cost/risks versus the benefits.

So if this helps ONE PERSON who reads it to avoid the problems we faced, then it is successful. Sorry you don't like it.

Lazyboy59 ...

I was considering changing my user name from daver328 to "MOMA'S BOY" ... ? It has a nice ring to it!

(Half a Moma's boy" is just too long!)

We've rented from Thrifty and from Europecar, out of both Cancun and Merida, toured around the Yucatan and had the time of our lives. There is a freedom that comes with driving. During both trips we really enjoyed our contacts with locals in smaller out of the way places. We felt totally safe at all times - we don't drive at night, though. Both times we rented, we went for a "test drive" in the vehicle. Once, we requested another vehicle and there was no fuss. We loved driving around for our vacation.
