Oaxaca/Vera Vruz/Tlaxacala

I'm looking to combine these three cities in a 2 week vacation in January. Any information on places to stay, day trips, beach lodging, would be appreciated. Also bus transportation to and from in most logical order. Any festivals available during that time period.

Thanks, Dave

Your transit point for buses will be Puebla.

It will be chilly in Oaxaca and Tlaxcala in Jan. The beaches around Veracruz are nothing special and may still be recovering from hurricane damage.

If you can get an open jaws air ticket, say in to MEX or PBC and out from OAX, it will likely save you some backtracking.

I agree, Golf coast is not the best place for beaches. Nice spot thought is Catemaco lake (slightly south from Veracruz). It is a nature reserve, the lake is next the the sea, you can stay overnight in nice cabanas constructed on the pier over the lake.

If you like pyramids, go to see Tajin (north from Veracruz) or Monte Alban (one day trip from Oaxaca).

As for festivals...what kind of festivals you're looking for? Each year there is a huge Carnaval in Veracruz, sometimes between january and february.

music festivals of any type. Would it be better to stay in Oaxaca on the marina? Any special hotel names that you prefer? Thanks for everyone's help, Dave

Veracruz has lots of music, Caribbean/Cuban style. Old folks trot out danzón many evenings in the squares.

The beaches will be crowded in January, but there are many on the coast of Oaxaca. They involve a short flight or long bus journey from Oaxaca city. If it's beach you want, you might be better to forget Veracruz (which is suffereing from post hurricane damage anyway) and concentrate on Puebla-Tlaxcala-Oaxaca.

True, Veracruz has music all year round, you can find people dancing on the squares or in the parks in the evenings.

Here's the link to the Carnaval: www.carnavalveracruz.com.mx

As for Oaxaca beaches, you might like Puerto Escondido.

I really liked Mazunte and Zipolite, but there is not much happening there, they are small beaches with cabanas and few visitors, laid back.

PS: It looks to me (from the picture you selected) you like rave? If so, check this page too: http://www.ticketmaster.com.mx

You will find program of concerts, "musica electronica", festivals all around Mexiko. Last year there was a great open air rave below the pyramids of Cholula...which is in the area you want to cover.
