The Premier Inn on Ashbourne Road should be okay but there will be queues of traffic heading for Markeaton Island if you were planning going to the A50 for Alton Towers. However you can avoid pretty well all the traffic if you turn left out of Premier Inn and take first left into Brun Lane and then head for Long Lane. It is then a fairly staright route to Rocester where you pick up the main Alton Towers route. It is a slower road but you can avoid the rush hour traffic. Otherwise allow plenty of time to get to the A50 via A38 route.

Would you not be going through Ashbourne on the A52 and then onto Towers

Therefore all the R/H traffic is going the other way?

Then avoiding the A38 and A50

I would turn left for Ashbourne and as FreyasMumandDad said avoid the traffic which will all be going the other way into Derby.
