Getting from Royal Natal National Park to Kruger

We are starting our South African trip in the Drakensburg mountains at Royal Natal National Park. We then need to get to the Drakensberg escarpment area for a couple of days before going to Kruger. Should we fly there from Durban or is there a good way to drive this taking a few days ?

After this we are going mobile camping in Botswana and on to Victoria Falls.

Hi Cecilia, to drive this will take around 8 hours if you go via the N11 over Ermelo and up to the N4. Alternatively, you can take the N3 to either Durban or Johannesburg (about 3 hours either way) and fly from there to Nelspruit. If you have a rental car and enjoy long drives, and planning to do a self-drive trip through Kruger, you may want to drive it and see a bit more of the South African countryside. However, if you are staying at a lodge or doing a guided Kruger Park safari and won't need your vehicle there, it would make sense to fly to Nelspruit. Some guided safaris depart from Johannesburg, so if you plan on joining one of those all you need to do is drive the 3 hours to Johannesburg and join up with a safari departing from there. From Johannesburg, it takes about 5 hours by road to get to Kruger.

Hope this helps!

It sounds like you have a 4 x4 vehicle to use on your visits? My advice will be to drive to OR Tambo International Airport and use the long term parking facility on the southern side of the airport where a shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at the airport vica versa. A period of 4 days parking will cost about ZAR 200.00. You will have to drive from Shaka International any case all the way back to Gauteng to reach Botswana if you want to fly from Durban. Using OR TAmbo as a base, you are half way to Botswana. That is if you do not want to travel to Kruger National by own vehicle. Then fly in to Nelspruit wit SA Airlink.

Alternatively, drive yourself via Ermelo to Nelspruit or Sabie. It will be time saving to go on to Zimbabwe to the Vic Falls from there as it is closer to the South African border. Alternatively you will have to use the N4 to get to Pretoria and from there on to Rustenburg on your way to Botswana.

Good luck and you chose a perfect time to visit the Drakensburg and Kruger. It is summer time here and remeber an umbrella, thunderstormsa re common that time of the year. Not a lot of rain but one never knows.
