Drakensberg where to stay and best day hikes

Hello,

As part of our trip in August we like to spend 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Drakensberg area. On each day we like to do a day hike. It is our first holiday in South Africa.

Our stop before is at Ballito (near Durban) and we are on our way to Johannesburg. It looks like the Central & North (Royal Natal) part of the Drakensberg is the best on route.

What is the best place to spend the night(s) budget max. 700 Rand a night (2 persons). What are the best day hikes for a first-timer?

Seems like you will only have 2 days to actually do some walking. I suggest Kamberg (Game pass shelter) and Giants Castle (worlds view) for the 2 days. There are lots of places to stay and you could stay at the kzn wildlife camps. But a good tip is antbear guest house which is actually more expencive than what you want to pay but ask for a discount and you might just be surprised at an amazing offer.

Hello and there are lots of choices, however based on your time and budget I would also suggest you look at KZN Wildlife. The best two choices would be Giants Castle & Didima (Cathedral Peak). There are lots of hikes/walks to choose from and the accommodation is good with a choice of self catering or eating in their restaurants. We found the food very good and great value for money. These two camps are also right in the mountains so no driving needed once you are there.
