Railay or Ao Nang?

This will be my 4th trip to Thailand. I've been to Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. I'm travelling with my husband and we are looking for a very nice beach, not too touristy, but with a handful or restaurants and ability to walk around. Would you recommend Railay or Ao Nang? From what i've read, Ao Nang is very touristy, but East Railay is very swampy...? Any hotels you would recommend? We are looking at Bhu Nga Thani

Thanks!

Ao Nang Beach, iMO is not one of the best beaches if you are after a really nice beach and most accommodation is not on the beach in Ao Nang, the Beach Road has shops and restaurants along it. We stayed in Ao Nang for 10 days in 2008 and it was too long for me, the tailors nearly drove me mad!

West Railay has a beautiful beach and some stunning scenery, most bungalows have their own restaurants, but I don't think there are shops there to speak of.

Have you considered Khao Lak, this might fit the bill?

I recommend you to stay at West side location: Railay Bay Resort, Sand Sea Resort. Good deals on AGODA.com/ EXPEDIA.COM

It depends if you prefer a busier place or not; Railay is quieter but we prefer Ao Nang but like Cassnu says also check out Khao Lak if you haven't been there.

Are there vendors at night or other establishments (restaurants etc) to see other than at the hotels?

In Ao Nang and also I imagine in Khao Lak there are plenty of street vendors, restaurants, shops etc.

I would pick Railay. It's a gorgeous beach with an even more stunning one within 10mins walk via Railay east.. There is a wee 'Walking Street' off central Railay west with about 10-15 clothes stalls, climbing shops and bars and cafes. There are heaps more over on the East Railay side which is good for popping over for a meal (only a 10 minute safe walk). The restaurants over there seemed to be better for us than the actual resort hotel restaurants. Bhu Nga Thani looks really flash but I would still prefer to stay on West Railay personally. East Railay isn't as picturesque but more happening at night.
