How does the weather affect beaches?

I have heard that some beaches are calm, but can sometimes have rough surf. (for ex, Dawn Beach) Is there any way to check the weather that morning and tell if a beach will be rough or calm? Is one part of the island better or worse depending on the wind direction? Or is there someplace that posts surf conditions?

I'm not aware of any sites or places that report surf conditions. Every beach is different and conditions can change very quickly, so you may have to just eyeball it. For example, we were staying on the beach in Grand Case a few weeks ago - for the first few days of our trip, there was plenty of beach to walk from Petite Plage all the way to the cemetery at the other end of Grand Case. By the time we left 2 weeks later, there was hardly any beach at all at the Petite Plage end and walking on the beach into the heart of Grand Case was not possible.

Our experience has been that the Atlantic side of the island (Dawn Beach) is typically more rough than the Caribbean side, but that's not always the case, either.....

Other posters on this form may know of a reporting mechanism to assist you. Please post if you know of one!

Thanks!

Pinel Island is always the same no matter what the conditions are. It is always very calm.. meaning no waves at all.

windguru is excellent but I don't think it defines which beach is rougher. usually the beaches on the Atlantic side, like Dawn beach, are rougher.

Mullet Bay can go from calm to rough overnight.

Not rougher, but it does tell us how strong the wind is and which direction. Keeps us from getting sand blasted!!!!!!! LOL
